ORCHARD PARK — Jamestown claimed its fifth straight victory and moved into second place in Section VI Division 1 following a 27-26 victory over Orchard Park.

Leading by a point in the final seconds, Jamestown eighth-grader Katie Melquist broke up a pass at the goal line, allowing the Red & Green to leave Orchard Park (5-3-2, 3-2-1) with the win.

“It was a huge team effort,” Jamestown head coach Steve Propheter said. “Our girls fought all the way to the end and it paid off.”

Kiarelis Brito led the Red & Green on offense, rushing for 160 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns. The highlight was a 67-yard third-quarter run that tied the game 26-26. Marcia McIntyre connected with Kinsley Berg for the crucial extra point to put the visitors in front and they held on.

Berg finished with 30 yards on the ground on six carries and scored two 1-point conversions; McIntyre completed four passes for 42 yards and ran seven times for 46 yards and a TD; and Melquist had three receptions, one for a 1-point conversion.

Defensively, JaLeiya Glover collected five flag pulls and two pass breakups; Chryssa Wall added four flag pulls; Addison Cappalino recorded three flag pulls, including two for loss, and a pair of sacks; and Berg intercepted a first-quarter pass that set up Jamestown’s first score.
