Southwestern’s season ends in Medina
MEDINA — Last year, Southwestern’s season came to an end when the Trojans were no-hit by Medina in a 4-0 loss in the Section VI Class B final.
This year, a round earlier, they didn’t fare much better.
Mustangs junior Preston Woodworth threw a three-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts and three walks as No. 2 Medina beat No. 3 Southwestern 8-0 in a Class B semifinal Thursday afternoon.
Woodworth threw 63 of his 98 pitches for strikes. He allowed a two-out double to Oscar Harris in the first inning and a two-out double to Rece Card in the second inning before Gavin Anderson’s one-out single in the sixth.
The Mustangs scored all eight of their runs off Trojans starter Lucas Genareo, but just two of the runs were earned after Southwestern made five errors in the field. Genareo struck out seven and walked four while allowing just four hits.
Medina’s first run came in the third inning. Aiden Papaj led off with a single to right field, went to second on an error and scored on an RBI groundout by Woodworth.
The Mustangs tacked on three runs in the fourth. Kolton Fletcher reached on an error, stole second and third, and scored on Carlos Doval’s RBI groundout. Ryan Pegelow then reached on an error, stole second and scored on Papaj’s RBI single to left field. Papaj advanced to second on a throw to the plate and later stole third before stealing home.
Medina’s final four runs came in the fifth inning. With one out, Hadrian Batista walked and Jimmy Dieter was hit by a pitch before Fletcher reached on an error that plated Batista. Doval followed with a two-run single, stole second and third, and scored when Pegelow was thrown out at first on a dropped third strike.
Trailing 8-0, Anderson was the Trojans’ lone base runner of the final two innings.
The Mustangs will take on No. 1 JFK in Saturday’s 4 p.m. final at Frontier High School. The Bears beat No. 5 Royalton-Hartland 7-2 in Thursday’s other semifinal.
MAPLE GROVE WINS IN WALK-OFF
BEMUS POINT — Kyle Yohe hit a game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh inning as No. 1 Maple Grove rallied past No. 4 Franklinville for an 11-10 victory in a Class D semifinal.
Trailing by a run with one out in the seventh, Red Dragons sophomore Jaxon Kraft was hit by an 0-2 pitch. He then stole second and third before scoring the tying run on senior Liam Price’s RBI infield single. After a stolen base, Yohe hit the game-winning RBI single to left-center field.
Maple Grove freshman Aleck Garrett earned the win in 3 1-3 innings of relief.
“The only reason we were in the game was because of him,” Maple Grove head coach Pete Pannes said of Garrett.
Aiden Dahlberg went 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored; Yohe was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored; Garrett singled, walked twice and scored two runs; and Zeke Padd scored a pair of runs for the Red Dragons.
