Lumia wins 400m hurdles at ECICs
EAST AURORA — The bad weather slowed down the competitors at the Erie County Interscholastic Conference track and field championships on Saturday, but it did not stop Jamestown sophomore Beckett Lumia from ascending to the top of the podium.
After earning the top seed in the 400-meter hurdles on Friday with a time of 57.55, Lumia slowed down in Saturday’s rain-soaked final, but still finished ahead of the pack with a time of 58.30 to claim the ECIC championship.
The weather did not help Lumia in the 100, but Jamestown junior Angel Martinez persevered after entering as the 9-seed with a time of 11.74 to take third place in the event.
Jamestown senior Finn Caswell added to his third-place finish in the 800 on Friday with another podium placement on Saturday as he took fourth in the 1,600 at 4:27.37.
Jamestown also took second in the 1,600 relay as the team of Ali Alkharsan, Robert Williams, Braiden Kennedy and Lumia raced to a time of 3:38.66. Lancaster posted the winning time of 3:33.14.
Lancaster won both of the team championships as the girls scored 104 points and the boys had 105.50.
