Fredonia Knocks Off Depew In Flag Football Semifinals

DEPEW — Fredonia is headed to the Section VI Class C flag football championship game after knocking off Depew, the top seed, 32-25 on Wednesday night in the semifinal.

Head coach Nick Bertrando couldn’t be happier.

“I’m proud of the grit they showed in the second half,” he said. “It was a nice win for the girls.”

The victory means the Hillbillies (15-2), the fifth seed, will take on No. 2 Pioneer (14-0) in the title game, which is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Sweet Home High School. Depew finishes the season 11-2-1.

Fredonia led 13-0 after the first quarter, highlighted by Nora Polhamus’ pick-6, but found itself trailing 19-13 at intermission.

“It was a big-time gut-check (at halftime),” Bertrando said. “The ladies answered the bell.”

The Hillbillies regained the lead with two TDs in the third quarter, and both teams scored a touchdown in the final period. Fredonia’s Madelyn Polhamus clinched the victory when she intercepted a pass with six seconds remaining.

Statistically, Sophia Utegg tossed three touchdown passes; Nora Polahmus caught six passes for 123 yards and two TDs; Madelyn Polhamus added another touchdown reception; and Emma Perry rushed for 82 yards on 12 carries.

Defensively, Megan Ivory collected eight flag pulls, had three tackles for loss and recorded two sacks; Perry had six flag pulls, two passes defended; Nora Polhamus added seven flag pulls and the interception for a TD; and Mikaela Sciarrino registered five flag pulls.
