SALAMANCA — The Southwestern track and field team had several fine performances at the 37th annual Super 8 meet Friday, but junior Marlana Cresanti was the headliner as she was named the meet MVP for the girls.

Cresanti was the winner of two individual events and was the anchor for the 1,600-meter relay team that took first place in 4:08.24. On her own, she narrowly won the 200 meters with a time of 26.68 as Dunkirk freshman Chianti Lopez finished behind her at 26.80 and Olean eighth-grader Adriana Sequerth came in at 26.94. Earlier Cresanti claimed the 400 meters in 58.80.

Maple Grove senior Ethan Verbosky was the MVP for the boys, taking first in two events and helping the Red Dragons win both the 3,200-meter relay in 8:31.55 and the 1,600-meter relay in 3:27.14 — finishing as the anchor in each event. He also comfortably won the 800 and 1,600 meters by more than four seconds in each race, running 1:55.92 and 4:42.34 respectively.

Cresanti was not alone in Southwestern success as both throwers — Mikayla Johnson and Tyler McIntyre — claimed the shot put and discus titles, setting meet records in the discus.

Johnson won the shot put at 42 feet, 4 inches, while she set the discus mark at 129-10. McIntyre won the shot put with 50-6 and he moved the new discus record to 166-7. Then fellow Trojan, Tryniti Card, set the new meet record in the 800 meters with a blazing time of 2:18.21.

New marks were also set in the boys 3,000-meter steeplechase by Fillmore’s Eli Strickland at 10:24.60 and the boys long jump by Wellsville’s Xavier Scott at 22-4.50.

Scott was a double winner for Wellsville as he also claimed the 110-meter hurdles in 14.72, Genesee Valley/Belfast’s Callahan Tallman won both the triple jump (41-2.75) and the high jump (6-4) and host Salamanca boasted a double winner with Xazavier Escobar winning the 100 (11.21) and 200 meters (22.48).
