RANDOLPH — Saturday was a good day for four members of the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association.

With steeplechase and pentathlon titles on the line, Grace Gilevski of Frewsburg (2,000-meter steeplechase), Mariella Russo of Fredonia (girls pentathlon), Flynn Fadale of Clymer/Sherman/Panama (3,000-meter steeplechase) and Nathan Keefe of Fredonia (boys pentathlon) claimed first places to conclude a big weekend of track & field action.

Less than 24 hours after the completion of the Super 8 Meet at Salamanca High School, athletes in the steeplechase and pentathlon made their way to the Randolph High School athletic facility to determine who was tops in those events.

Gilevski, a Bears’ junior, posted a time of 8 minutes, 21.09 seconds to post a comfortable win in the 2,000-meter steeplechase. Lily Elliss, a sophomore from Maple Grove, was second (8:33.47) and junior Bria Palmatier of Clymer/Sherman/Panama (8:46.80) was third.

In the girls pentathlon, junior Kaleigha Kosek of Iroquois was the overall champion, accumulating 2,753 points, but Russo, the Hillbillies’ sophomore, posted the most points among CCAA members, completing the five events with 2,142 points to narrowly edge senior Viktoriia Lozynska of Olean (2,118) for the league crown.

Strider Dahlin, a seventh-grader from Frewsburg, was third among CCAA competitors with a time of 12:03.57.

Finally, Keefe completed the Hillbillies’ fine day, accumulating 2,827 points in the boys pentathlon, which was more than enough to win that event. Seniors Bransen Gabel (2,505) and Quinn Janora (2,287), both of Cattaraugus-Little Valley, finished second and third, respectively.
