Cards, Bulldogs, Trojans post wins

RANDOLPH — Preston Swan and Aidan Taylor combined on a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts and one walk as No. 3 Randolph beat No. 6 Chautauqua Lake 3-1 in a Section VI Class C baseball quarterfinal Tuesday.

The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Raegan Smith led off wtih a walk and stole a pair of bases with one out before scoring when Laiden Wojtowicz reached on an error. The next batter, Gavin Senn, hit an RBI double to make it 2-0.

The Eagles answered with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Devin Hewes doubled with one out, went to third on a groundout and scored on Greyson Wellman’s RBI single.

But Randolph got that run back an inning later when Bryson Pitts walked with one out, went to second on an error and scored on Hunter Foster’s RBI infield single.

Taylor did the rest for the Cardinals. He struck out the side in the fifth and retired the side in order in the sixth. Then, after a walk to open the seventh, Taylor picked off a Chautauqua Lake runner before a pair of strikeouts to end the game.

Hewes pitched a complete game for the Eagles, allowing three hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out 11 and walking three.

Randolph will travel to No. 2 Falconer for a 5 p.m. semifinal Thursday.

BULLDOGS RALLY FOR QUARTERFINAL WIN

BROCTON — Jackson Crowell and Anthony Gatto combined on a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts as No. 5 Brocton/Cassadaga Valley beat No. 13 Allegany-Limestone 4-2 in a Class C quarterfinal.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Tanner Olmstead and Ray Santiago hit back-to-back one-out singles before Drew Gustafson’s RBI fielder’s choice.

The Gators actually took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Dylan Rhodes was hit by a pitch, Bronx Foster walked and Mike Questa walked to load the bases. Rhodes then scored on a passed ball and Braeden Cowburn was hit by a pitch before Foster scored on another passed ball.

Brocton/Cassadaga Valley quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Olmstead doubled and Santiago hit an RBI double to tie the game. Gustafson followed with a walk and Gatto hit an RBI single. Gustafson later scored on a passed ball.

The Bulldogs will travel to No. 1 Gowanda for a 5 p.m. semifinal Thursday.

HARRIS HITS 4TH HOMER FOR TROJANS

LAKEWOOD — Oscar Harris went 3 for 3 with a home run to lead No. 3 Southwestern past No. 6 Springville 8-6 in a Class B quarterfinal at Packard Field.

The Trojans jumped on the Griffins for four runs in the first inning. Wilson Genareo led off with a single and Lucas Genareo reached on a fielder’s choice before Harris homered to left field on the fourth pitch of the inning. After George Marshall walked and Gavin Anderson singled, Alex Watkins hit an RBI single to left field and Rece Card followed with a sacrifice fly.

Springville made it 6-4 in the top of the fifth inning before Southwestern added two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

A two-run top of the seventh pulled the Griffins within two, but Lucas Genareo struck out the final batter of the game with a runner on third to end it.

Wilson Genareo went 3 for 4 with two runs scored; Anderson was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored; and Lucas Genareo scored twice.

Wilson Genareo struck out eight while allowing three hits and four runs (three earned) in five innings. Lucas Genareo got the final six outs with strikeouts to earn the save.

The Trojans will travel to No. 2 Medina for a 5 p.m. semifinal Thursday.

CAPOZZI SILENCES FREWSBURG

GOWANDA — Carter Capozzi quickly dispatched of No. 8 Frewsburg as No. 1 Gowanda’s ace tossed a three-hitter with five strikeouts and one walk as the Panthers beat the Bears 4-0 in a Class C quarterfinal.

The Panthers scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and two more in the sixth.

In the fourth, Nicholas Smuda singled and Jayden Fish singled with one out before Tristin Luther hit an RBI single and E Graham reached on an error to make it 2-0.

In the sixth, Smuda singled and Fish reached on an error before Luther hit another RBI single. Aiden Geiger later reached on a two-out error to plate Gowanda’s fourth run.

Drake Beckstrom allowed seven hits and four runs (one earned) while striking out four and walking two for Frewsburg. Chase Lombardo, Tage Mazzurco and Brody Anderson each singled.

Gowanda will host No. 5 Brocton/Cassadaga Valley in a 5 p.m. semifinal Thursday.

MEDINA TWO-HITS HILLBILLIES

MEDINA — Aiden Papaj threw a two-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts and one walk as No. 2 Medina beat No. 10 Fredonia 8-0 in a Class B quarterfinal.

Colin Luce singled in the first inning and Matt Cowan singled in the sixth inning for the Hillbillies

The Mustangs will host No. 3 Southwestern in a 5 p.m. semifinal Thursday.
