Gowanda and Maple Grove have earned No. 1 seeds in their respective classes in the Section VI baseball playoffs, which begin today in some classes.

The top seed in Class C, Gowanda will wait until Tuesday for a quarterfinal matchup while Maple Grove, the top seed in Class D, will wait until next Thursday for a semifinal matchup in its four-team bracket.

No. 9 Dunkirk will get postseason play underway today with a Class A2 prequarterfinal at No. 8 Albion. No. 10 Lake Shore will visit No. 7 Iroquois in that same bracket while Class A1 will also use a prequarterfinal today between No. 9 Kenmore East and No. 8 Cheektowaga to decide fill out its bracket.

Most classes start with prequarterfinals Saturday at noon, weather-permitting.

In Class B, the highest-seed locally is No. 3 Southwestern, which will host No. 14 Salamanca. No. 8 Silver Creek/Forestville will host No. 9 Akron while No. 10 Fredonia will visit No. 7 Tonawanda.

In Class C, No. 4 Westfield will host No. 13 Allegany-Limestone, No. 5 Brocton/Cassadaga Valley will host No. 12 Wilson, No. 6 Chautauqua Lake will host No. 11 North Collins and No. 8 Clymer/Sherman/Panama will host No. 9 Frewsburg.

In Class AAA semifinal play, No. 3 Jamestown will travel to No. 2 Niagara Falls. The winner will take on No. 1 Lancaster in a best-of-three series.

On Sunday, No. 3 Randolph will take on No. 14 Cattaraugus-Little Valley in a Class C prequarterfinal in Allegany-Limestone at 1 p.m.

On Tuesday, Class AA, Class B and Class C will play quarterfinals at higher seeds. Gowanda will host the winner of Frewsburg and Clymer/Sherman/Panama while No. 2 Falconer will host the winner of Barker and Portville.

Class A1 and Class A2 will play semifinals Tuesday with their finals set for Thursday at Frontier High School at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.

Next Thursday will also be semifinals for Class AA, Class B, Class C and Class D at higher seeds. No. 3 Pine Valley will travel to No. 2 Ellicottville while No. 1 Maple Grove will host No. 4 Franklinville in Class D.

Finals are set for Saturday, May 30. At Grand Island, Class AA will take place at 1 p.m. At Frontier, the Class A crossover will be at 1 p.m. and the Class B final will be at 4 p.m. At Salamanca, the Class C final will take place at 10 a.m. and the Class D final will be at 1 p.m.
