MAYVILLE — Katie Yudin has known nothing but league titles in her three seasons as Chautauqua Lake’s softball head coach.
The latest came Monday when the Eagles left no doubt in an 8-0 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 victory over second-place Clymer/Sherman/Panama.
Chautauqua Lake improved to 11-0 overall and more importantly 9-0 in the division with the victory, clinching the crown outright. The Eagles will attempt to finish a perfect league season Wednesday at Maple Grove if the weather cooperates.
“Our kids just put in the work. They show up every single day. I’m so proud of them top to bottom,” Yudin said postgame. “They saw the ball well, they fielded well and they pitched well. … That’s just us.”
The Wolfpack fell to 8-2 overall and 7-2 in Division 2 with the loss. With a win Monday in Mayville and Tuesday at home against Maple Grove, they had a chance to split the league title, but instead now will focus on exacting revenge in a possible Section VI Class C playoff matchup with the Eagles.

“I think if you get out of Class C in Section VI, you could make a run,” Clymer/Sherman/Panama head coach Dave Bodamer said. “It’s going to be tough.”
After recognizing Lucy Gates and Jillian Miller in a pregame Senior Day celebration, Chautauqua Lake jumped on Clymer/Sherman/Panama for four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Macy Ulsh singled and Alice Scarpine reached on an error before Lucy Ulsh hit an RBI single to center field. Just four pitches in, the Wolfpack found themselves trailing 1-0.
“Elli wasn’t 100%, but she left too much over the plate at times,” Bodamer said of his daughter, who struck out nine and walked one in the circle. Just three of the eight runs she allowed were earned. “They took advantage like good teams do.”
Gates hit into an RBI groundout to make it 2-0 and Kinslee Motter hit a sacrifice fly to center field before Miller singled and Karagan Fairbank hit an RBI single to make it 4-0.
“She’s a phenomenal pitcher. She throws strikes and I think we jumped on the first-pitch strike, and didn’t let much go by us,” Yudin said of Bodamer. “It’s always nice to jump on them in the first inning to take some of the pressure off.”

The Eagles added two runs in the bottom of the second inning as Cameron Mackey singled and scored on Macy Ulsh’s RBI triple to left field ahead of Alice Scarpine’s RBI groundout.
“That’s an excellent program, that’s why they’re at the top and they’ve been consistently at the top,” Bodamer said. “You can’t pick today to be the day that you have a bad day.”
Chautauqua Lake’s final two runs came in the fifth inning when Makennah Ryberg hit into a fielder’s choice. Motter beat a wild throw to the plate and Miller scored on the same error.
The run support was plenty for Macy Ulsh. The freshman right-hander tossed a four-hitter with eight strikeouts and two walks.
“Both Macy and Lexi (Szumigala) have done a phenomenal job for us this season. They’ve kind of split the time equally, kind of pitching by committee this year,” Yudin said. ” … They trust the defense behind them and have done an awesome job of doing that this season.”
The Wolfpack’s biggest threat came in the top of the sixth inning when Jessica Lyon led off with a double and Elli Bodamer reached on a dropped pop-up, but Addie Wiggers flew out to center field and Motter completed a double play when she threw behind Bodamer at first base.
“We haven’t had any trouble all year hitting. Kudos to Ulsh and what she did today. We had nine or 10 hits the first game and left a lot of girls on base,” Bodamer said. “We just couldn’t find holes and had trouble with contact. We have to figure it out before (today).”
Now that the league title is wrapped up, Chautauqua Lake will focus on defending its sectional crown.
“Top to bottom we’re seeing the ball well, we’re hitting the ball well and making adjustments at the plate,” Yudin said. “We’re putting the ball in play and letting stuff happen. I think that’s going to take us a long way.”
