Utegg Tosses 5 TD Passes in Fredonia Flag Victory
SPENCERPORT — Fredonia flag football coach Nick Bertrando took his team on what he called a “little bit of a road trip” on Saturday.
No problem, though.
Sophia Utegg apparently felt right at home.
The sophomore quarterback completed 16 of 26 passes for 241 yards and five touchdowns, four of them to junior Madelyn Polhamus, as the Hillbillies defeated Section V’s Spencerport 39-32 in a nonleague game.
“We got off to a pretty good start,” Bertrando said. “(Spencerport) did some things to sort of creep back in, but we had enough to make sure we came away with a win.”
The victory improved Fredonia to 4-0 on the season heading into Tuesday’s 7 p.m. home game against Lackawanna.
At this rate, the Hillbillies will be tough to beat.
Polahamus finished Saturday with nine receptions for 152 yards; junior Emma Perry ran for 131 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown; and Utegg, Perry and Juliana Snyder all had rushing conversions.
Defensively, freshman Megan Ivory collected four flag pulls, three tackles for loss and three sacks; and eighth-grader Avery Trippi recorded two flag pulls and a pair of tackles for loss.
