Trocki Leads Bears To Another Section VI Class C Championship

Jadyn Trocki had a hand in just about everything Frewsburg did in Saturday’s Section VI Class C final.

It ended with her hands on a championship plaque.

The Bears junior had 20 points, 10 assists, six blocked shots, four rebounds and two steals as No. 1 Frewsburg beat No. 3 Wilson 53-33 at Jamestown Community College’s Physical Education Complex.

“She’s inside-out. She’s flashy. She can shoot it. … She leads the transition and then you think you have her stopped, and she throws a bounce pass that’s just unbelievable,” Wilson head coach Brian Baker said of Trocki. “She’s, in my opinion, the best player in Western New York.”

The Bears’ title — their third straight and fourth in the past five seasons — sends them into next Saturday’s 7:45 p.m. Far West Regional at Finger Lakes Community College. The Rochester area will decide its representative Tuesday when C1 champion Canisteo-Greenwood takes on C2 champion Keshequa.

“We’ve been watching all season long,” Frewsburg head coach Sierra Beaver said. “We’ve kind of been working on a lot of things behind the scenes to get ready for what we might see. … The girls didn’t necessarily know why we were doing some of the drills that we were doing, but we were trying to make sure we were prepared and not caught off-guard when things down the line come our way.”

Jaden Jimerson scored 8 of her 17 points for the Bears in a 16-8 first quarter, but the Lakewomen played a fairly even second quarter that saw them trailing by 11 at halftime. After Wilson’s Abbie Faery scored the first basket of the third quarter to make it a nine-point game, Frewsburg went on a run to put the game away.

“I just thought they played so hard,” Baker said of his Lakewomen. “To be down 11 at half, to come out and make the first basket to cut it to single digits, it was just something special.”

Trocki hit a 3-pointer and followed with an assist to Jimerson before Jimerson and Lucy Moore hit free throws to make it 37-21.

“She did a great job. She got bodies on people. She didn’t force things. She didn’t turn the ball over,” Beaver said of Moore, who saw extended minutes with Abery Harvey in foul trouble and Elysse Gruber fighting an illness. ” … When the ball fell into her hands with an opportunity to score, she was able to take advantage.”

Jimerson then found Trocki for a layup to make it an 18-point game with 4:47 left in the third quarter. Eight of the nine points came off Wilson turnovers.

“Last year, she got quite a few minutes. … It really took her longer to get going this season scoring-wise than we thought maybe it would, but she’s just a grinder who works hard all the time,” Beaver said of Jimerson. “She was patient and continued to be confident in herself. I’m happy to finally see her be able to turn that corner and be a scoring threat every game.”

Frewsburg entered the fourth quarter with a 17-point lead and Trocki put an exclamation point on her day with a pair of assists to Harvey, one to Jimerson and one to Moore before blocking a shot.

“The ball comes out of nowhere sometimes. You think ‘I’m open,’ but you don’t necessarily think that she sees you, and then all of a sudden the ball is coming fast and furious at you. They’ve played together for a long time,” Beaver said of Trocki’s relationship with Jimerson and Harvey. “I think they both have really good hands and I think they’ve missed a couple before and they know that they better have their hands ready because it’s coming any time.”

All told, Trocki assisted on 10 of the other Bears’ 14 field goals made while she was in the game.

“We fortunately have had enough scorers on the floor the last few years where she has felt comfortable enough where she doesn’t have to force stuff,” Beaver said of Trocki. ” … We know we have other people who can produce and once they start to produce things open up for her, and she’s able to take advantage of those opportunities.”

NOTES: The title is the Bears’ eighth in program history. … Harvey had five rebounds and Gruber had four for Frewsburg, which shot 23 of 58 from the field, including 5 of 18 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 13 times. … Rowan Simpson had 10 points while Lucy Madan and Bella Thrush scored 6 points apiece for Wilson, which shot 13 of 48 from the field, including 3 of 14 from 3-point range. … Jimerson and Thrush were named the Heart of a Champion Character Athletes of the Game for their respective teams.
