Miles Moore Is State Champ

Bears’ Senior Wins 50-Yard Freestyle, Sets Section VI Record And Earns Automatic All-American Honors, Too

ITHACA — Bruce Johnson had a pretty good feeling about the second day of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships.

“We were excited,” the Frewsburg/Southwestern/Jamestown/Falconer head coach said. “We were ready to go. … You never really know until you get there, but they all felt quite confident going in.”

Miles Moore was particularly locked in at the Kelsey Partridge Bird Natatorium on the campus of Ithaca College on Saturday.

The senior captured the 50-yard freestyle with a NYSPHSAA-winning time of 20.35 that was not only a Section VI record, but also an automatic All-American time.

“He is an exciteable kid and very confident, which you have to be, especially in the 50 free,” Johnson said. “I pulled him aside before the race and told him, ‘If you hit your start, turn and finish, no one in the state is better.’ He swam just a perfect race.”

Miles Moore also placed sixth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.85.

Johnson was also pleased with the performances of his other swimmers.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Landon Frederes, Grady Moore, Mike Rambacher and Miles Moore placed 12th (1:38.23); Grady Moore placed 14th in the 50-yard freestyle (21.58) and ninth in the 100-yard butterfly (51:08); the 200-yard freestyle relay of Frederes, Rambacher, Grady Moore and Miles Moore was tied for fifth (1:26.74); and Frederes placed 20th in the consolation final in the 100-yard backstroke (54.18).

“Everyone is familiar with Frewsburg (now),” Johnson said. “Actually, the last six or seven years have been the best years in the history of the program.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
