Locals Shine At NYWAY State Tourney

SYRACUSE — The New York Wrestling Association for Youth crowned the state’s best earlier this month at the New York State Fairgrounds and several athletes from the area found success with a few ascending to the top spot on the podium.

Falconer Youth Wrestling led the way locally with six athletes taking the top spot in their weight classes and 18 total wrestlers earning places on the podium.

Alexandria Ward placed first in the Girls II (2018-19) 60-pound bracket, earning a 14-0 major decision against teammate Vivianna Monacelli. Ward then earned a pin over Mexico Wrestling’s Sophia Raymond in 53 seconds to claim the title. Monacelli wrestled back to third with a pin and a major decision.

Chase Beichner ascended the top of the podium in D3 (2018) 70 pounds, earning an 18-0 technical fall against Jeffrey Duncan of North Rose, a pin in 19 seconds against Braeden Pool and a pin over LeRoy’s Harlan DeJesus in 1:26 for the title.

Hannah Evans won the Girls V (2012-13) 165-pound bracket as the No. 5 seed, knocking off Lucy Hoffman in the semifinals with a pin in 41 seconds and then posting a 10-0 major decision in the final against Alice Shaver.

CHASE BEICHNER

Jaxson Love had a flawless run to the top of the D6 (2015) 62-pound podium with a pin in 15 seconds against East Aurora’s Brett Gill, a 6-0 decision over Jayden Yeager of Hilton Jr. Cadets, then a 10-0 major decision against Isaac Newell in the semifinals and a 9-0 major decision in the final to take down top-seed Deacon Wojtaszczyk of LeRoy.

Kayden Schimek also had a perfect run in the D4 (2017) 80-pound bracket with four pins as the No. 2 seed to claim his title. Schimek’s pins were 42 seconds against Noah Dragan of Adirondack, 37 seconds against Ryan Penhollow of Southwestern, 1:40 against Lucas Eichler in the semifinals and then 1:21 for the title against Kip Banta of Johnstown Pee Wee.

Penhollow wrestled back for sixth place on the podium, recording a crucial 5-0 decision and a pin in the consolation bracket to make the podium.

Riley Best captured the sixth title for Falconer in the D10 (2008-11) 190-pound bracket with only one scare on the way to victory. Best started with a pair of major decisions over Porter Vega 11-2 and Antero Encarnacion 9-1 before holding on to a 10-9 decision in the semifinals against Sincere Embry of Funky Panda Wrestling. Best built an 8-0 lead in the second period before Embry began charging back with three takedowns to end the match, but a pair of escapes helped Best seal the deal.

In the championship, Best got back to business with a 7-3 decision against Benny Feinberg of Honeoye Falls/Lima Wrestling.

Kamdyn Schimek

Falconer had a trio of wrestlers take second on the podium with Maciela Garcia at Girls II (2018-19) 50 pounds, Paislee Dickerson at Girls IV (2014-15) 65 pounds and Noah Brandt D10 (2008-11) 165 pounds.

Joining Monacelli on the podium at third, are Maliyah Stone at Girls VI (2008-11) 100 pounds, Rylan Achterberg at D3 (2018) 83 pounds and Sierra Shelters at Girls IV (2014-15) 75 pounds.

Another four Falconer wrestlers placed sixth on the podium with Brody Beichner D8 (2013) 93 pounds, Jeffrey Gunnell at D2 (2019) 54 pounds, Micah Barber at D5 (2016) 70 pounds and Parker Gustafson at D4 (2017) 59 pounds and Theo Monacelli placed fifth at D4 (2017) 67 pounds.

GOWANDA

The Gowanda Wrestling Club had three athletes claim the top spot on the podium and 11 total place at the event.

JAXSON LOVE

Ashton Draudt dominated the D2 (2019) 44-pound bracket with two pins, a major decision and a technical fall. Draudt began the tournament with an 11-1 major decision over John Tao of Marcellus, then pinned Kingston Keith of Misfits Wrestling in 2:27, he pinned Zhayne Nauta of Indian River Pee Wee in the semifinals and then recorded a 15-0 technical fall against Wade Williams of Akron for the title.

Maverick Olszewski also breezed his way to a championship at D4 (2017) 71 pounds. He first posted a 9-1 major decision over Danielsen Gibeau of Warrior Warehouse Wrestling, then pinned Levi Hill of Spencerport Jr. Rangers in 14 seconds, earned a 6-0 decision over Caleb Smith in the semifinals and used a third-period nearfall to defeat Lucas Ackland of Black Belt Wrestling 7-3 in the final.

Nathan Warrior added the final title at D10 (2008-11) 150 pounds, taking the long path needing six victories. He first pinned Nathan Chapman of Mat Creatures Wrestling in 2:56, pinned Zoijon Zoirov of Willpower Wrestling at 2:16, earned a medical forfeit against Landon Dalaker, earned a pin in the quarterfinals against Chase McVige of Honeoye Falls/Lima at 1:29, scored a 2-0 decision against Carter Allen of Fulton in the semifinals and pinned Tennison Eiss of Black Belt Wrestling for the championship.

Falling just short of the top spot were Thatcher Gernatt in D5 (2016) 94 pounds, suffering a pin in the final after using a pin and a pair of major decisions to work his way into the championship. Then Everett Gernatt lost the D7 (2014) 120-pound championship with an identical path, a pin, two major decisions then being pinned in the title match.

Gowanda reached the podium with Mickey Mescall at third in D8 (2013) 195 pounds, Daphne Twoguns in third at Girls V (2012-13) 86 pounds, Bryson Olszewski in fourth at D7 (2014) 80 pounds, Natalie Ferguson in fourth at Girls IV (2014-15) 102 pounds, Raelyn Diebel in fifth at Girls VI (2008-11) 114 pounds and Duke Wrazen in sixth at D4 (2017) 115 pounds.

ALEXANDRIA WARD

WESTFIELD/RIPLEY/CHAUTAUQUA LAKE

The Westfield/Ripley/Chautauqua Lake Wrestling Club had quite the showing with 15 podium finishes including a pair of winners.

Audrey Schiedel won both her matches in the Girls V (2012-13) 74-pound group to win, posting a 7-3 decision against Kendall Brahney of Crown City and then a 1-0 decision over Anna Martens of Salamanca. Martens dropped her other match to finish third in the group.

Aurora Maring picked up the other victory in the Girls VI (2008-11) 132-pound bracket as the top seed. Maring had a perfect run in the tournament with a pin over Madilynn Simmons of Grindhouse at 1:17, another pin over Catlyn Kalunda of Indian River Pee Wee in 1:01 and a 10-0 technical fall over Aurora Parnell of Webster Thomas Wrestling in the final.

Another pair fell just short in the title match with Kassidy Benedetto suffering a 9-3 decision in the Girls V (2012-13) 98-pound final. Benedetto posted two pins to reach the championship match.

Mae Machemer was also pinned in her championship, taking second at Girls IV (2014-15) 81 pounds after securing three pins to reach the final.

Also reaching the podium are Bruno Muscarella in third at D6 (2015) 78 pounds, Annabelle Lear earned fourth in Girls IV (2014-15) 118 pounds and then fifth in the D6 (2015) 122-pound bracket, Charlie Machemer took fourth at D5 (2016) 70 pounds, Ezra Schiedel fourth at D2 (2019) 41 pounds, Lilly Burrows fourth at Girls IV (2014-15) 87 pounds, Tayler Pinzok fourth at Girls VI (2008-11) 107 pounds, Weston Bunce fourth at D1 (2020) 41 pounds, Win Nelson fourth at D1 (2020) 50 pounds, Charlie Barringer sixth at D8 (2013) 106 pounds and Kinzer Gilbert-Barr sixth at Girls II (2018-19) 45 pounds.

SOUTHWESTERN

The Southwestern Wrestling Club had all three athletes make the podium, including a top finish from Carson Ross.

Competing in the D1 (2020) 65-pound group, Ross earned pins in both his matches to take first place. He first pinned Jermane Tucker of Reese Rasslin in 2:27 and then had an easier time with a pin in 18 seconds against Grayson Scott of Penn Yan Wrestling.

Jace Penhollow earned third in D8 (2013) 128 pounds and Ryan Penhollow was sixth at D4 (2017) 80 pounds.

Competing for the Ramblers Wrestling Club, but a Southwestern student, Carter Ray also claimed a first-place finish.

SALAMANCA

The Salamanca Youth Warriors had quite the showing with two winners along with another 11 podium finishes.

Stryker Brown won the D7 (2014) 70-pound title on a flawless run with three pins and a major decision. He opened with a pin over Colin Knab of North Tonawanda in 1:15, took down Devin Pool of Honeoye Falls/Lima in 38 seconds, defeated Louis Milgrim of VHW in 2:37 and won the title over Alex Rotolo with a 9-0 major decision.

Laila Weitzel won the Girls III (2016-17) 70-pound bracket with little threat. She first disposed of Whitney Point’s Lillian Black with a 15-2 major decision, pinned Penn Yan’s Lily-Ann Easling in 1:16, earned an 8-0 major decision against VHW’s Aria Thormes and secured a 4-0 decision over Brielle Spear Tripp in the championship.

Coming up just short in second were Garrett Zolner in D6 (2015) 102 pounds with a pin, a technical fall and a narrow decision before being pinned in the championship. Olivia Martens was the runnerup in the Girls IV (2014-15) 75-pound bracket after a pin and a narrow decision led to a technical fall defeat in the final.

Anna Martens had a pair of podium finishes, taking third at Girls V (2012-13) 74 pounds and sixth in D8 (2013) 70 pounds. Joining her are Brycen Bialaszewski in third at D8 (2013) 70 pounds, Gunner Jensen third at D6 (2015) 88 pounds, Ashtin Oakes fourth in D5 (2016) 122 pounds, Lorelai Walkinshaw in fourth at Girls IV (2014-15) 126 pounds, Adam Arena fifth in D4 (2017) 86 pounds, Kaiden Daniels fifth at D7 (2014) 130 pounds and Miles Whitcomb fifth at D3 (2018) 61 pounds.

RANDOLPH

Randolph Wrestling Club’s Lucas Lundsten brought back a second-place medal after coming up just short at D3 (2018) 83 pounds. Lundsten clawed his way to the final with a 10-6 decision in the quarterfinals and then secured a sudden-victory takedown in the semifinals for a 9-6 decision before being pinned in the championship match.
