Kameron Milne’s Value Doesn’t Show Up In Stats

When Jamestown takes on Fairport tonight in the Class AAA Far West Regional basketball game at Buffalo State Sports Arena, Kameron Milne will have one of the best seats in the house.
He’ll be on the bench a few spots down from head coach Billy Miley and his staff, and well within earshot of his five teammates who will be running up and down the court at any given time against the Section V champs.
The chances that Milne will see important minutes are slim.
But anyone who attends the 5 p.m. game — the winner advances to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association final four next weekend — will certainly know who he is simply by casting a glance his way. He’ll be wearing jersey No. 44, standing more than he sits and yelling encouragement for all 32 minutes.
Because if there is a young man who bleeds Red & Green more than the son of Jesse and Kristen Milne, I’d love to meet him. In a day and age where athletic success is too often based on how many points someone scores or how much playing time he or she receives, it’s been refreshing to watch Milne this season for what he brings to the Section VI champions in ways that don’t get recognized in newspaper clippings or on social media.
“I really just want to support my teammates,” Milne said earlier this week after a practice at McElrath Gymnasium. “I just love basketball, even if I don’t get playing time.”
While he may not lead Jamestown in points or rebounds, Milne certainly tops the team in assists, just not the ones that lead to a made basket. Instead, the 18-year-old senior supports his teammates in pregame warmups, during introductions and, most notably, when the regulars hit a big shot or make a critical defensive stop.
“He’s done that since he was younger,” Miley said. “He likes to call himself the ‘Hypeman,’ constantly bringing energy to his teammates. There are a lot of ways to contribute. It’s not just rebounds and points. There are other things we need for us to be successful, and he has certainly contributed to that.”
And when Milne does get a chance to see the court?
Well, let’s just say he’s not bashful.
In fact, he loves to hoist shots from beyond the arc. While he has yet to make a 2-point field goal (he’s 0 for 2) this season, Milne has made seven 3-pointers, which account for his 21 points.
Miley remembers one of the made treys vividly.
“I think it was at Frontier. Kam makes a 3 and he stared down OUR bench,” Miley said with a smile. “I’ve never seen that before. You don’t usually stare down your OWN bench.”
Focusing on the Red & Green has never been an issue for Milne.
“I think it’s important to have energy on the team, because there are times when we can be flat,” he said. “It’s important to have good energy, and I just want to be the guy who brings it, and have it transferred to the floor because that’s how we get stuff done.”
Speaking of energy, Milne expects plenty of it later today at Buffalo State, similar to what the Red & Green experienced in last week’s sectional championship game win over Health Sciences.
“We had a great student section,” he said. “We just have to bring that energy and I think we’ll do just fine.”
