Jadyn Trocki didn’t have a great first half shooting the ball Thursday.
But the reigning state Class C Player of the Year came to life in the final minute of the second quarter.
A two-hand shove to the back on a breakaway tends to do that.
Trocki had 6 points and an assist in the final 60 seconds of the first half to jump-start No. 1 Frewsburg to a 61-38 defeat of No. 5 Randolph in a Section VI Class C semifinal at Jamestown Community College’s Physical Education Complex.
The end of the first half was all Trocki. The junior drilled a 3-pointer with 40 seconds left, then appeared to be in the clear for a breakaway layup before an intentional foul took her to the ground with 27.7 seconds remaining. After the ball fell through the net, Trocki picked herself off the floor and nearly got a technical herself after celebrating in the face of the Randolph players.

“I’ve been coaching her for five years and I’ve been waiting for this game,” Frewsburg head coach Sierra Beaver said of Trocki. “She’s had games where she’s had more points, more steals, a bigger stat line maybe, but this is the first time where I’ve seen her take over.”
When the dust settled, Trocki sank one of two free throws.
“She was getting frustrated, but we had a 15-point lead. … If it was a closer game or if we were losing, that maybe would’ve weighed heavier on her,” Beaver said of Trocki’s shooting struggles. “To be able to go to the foul line and knock down some shots got her confidence back.”
Just before the buzzer sounded to end the second quarter, Trocki drove into the lane and found Abery Harvey alone under the basket. The senior laid in her 12th and 13th points of the first half to give the defending state champions a 17-point lead as they headed into the locker room.
“Our goal was to get Jadyn to be able to penetrate into the lane and for our forwards to get position on their wings,” Beaver said. ” … Abery hasn’t been feeling well for a few weeks, but she’s been fighting through it for us. … She’s a hard-working, unselfish kid. She just wants to do whatever she can to help her team be successful.”
The Cardinals never got closer than that 17-point deficit the rest of the way as the Bears’ lead grew to as many as 28 midway through the fourth quarter.
“I thought their defense early on gave us some issues and I thought we got a little rattled early on,” Randolph head coach David Pihlblad said. “I think it took us a while to kind of settle into the game and that’s a lot of our inexperience.”
Trocki’s final line was one you’d expect from one of the best players in Western New York: 22 points, 11 assists, three steals, three rebounds and three blocked shots. Harvey added 21 points, 10 rebounds and two steals for Frewsburg.
“Jadyn and Abery are probably the best 1-2 punch around, in the area and Western New York,” Pihlblad said. “When plays break down they are always going to find the right pass and make the right decision. I thought we did some really good things defensively, but sometimes really good players make plays and they did that tonight.”
Ava Sears led Randolph with 13 points and four steals.
The Bears — winners of seven sectional titles, including three in the last four years — have been the New York State Sportswriters Association’s top-ranked Class C team for the entire season. They’ll put that ranking on the line at noon Saturday when they take on No. 3 Wilson in the Class C sectional final back at JCC. The Lakewomen beat No. 7 Cassadaga Valley 51-45 in Thursday’s second semifinal.
NOTES: Jaden Jimerson had 9 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three assists for Frewsburg, which shot 24 of 55 from the field, including 6 of 16 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 12 times. … Gianna Bowles had 9 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals; Ryanne Bushey had 7 points and six rebounds; Tessa Brown had 7 points; and Hannah Hill grabbed seven rebounds for Randolph, which shot 12 of 39 from the field, including 6 of 20 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 22 times.
