CANANDAIGUA – One trip to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association final four is a dream for most high schools.
To advance twice and win a title is hard to believe.
Frewsburg is closing in on uncharted territory.
Jadyn Trocki tied a career high with 37 points as the Bears held off an early fourth-quarter push from Keshequa to beat the Tigers 57-43 in the Class C Far West Regional on Saturday night at Finger Lakes Community College.
“I still can’t believe that we are going back after losing the players we lost last year,” Frewsburg head coach Sierra Beaver said Saturday night. ” … Our slogan for the season is “Why Not?” That’s just kind of been how we’ve approached every game. What do they have that we don’t?” Next up for the Section VI champions is a third straight trip to the state semifinals at Hudson Valley Community College. Frewsburg, which won its first ever state title last year, will look to repeat in Troy starting Friday at 10 a.m. against Section IV champion Delaware Academy.
“I knew our (semifinal) game would be the winner of Section III and Section IV. We’ve been following who we felt like who would come out of there,” Beaver said. “We felt like it would be (Delaware Academy) and (Sunday) I’ll start breaking them down. We’ll be back to work putting some stuff in on Monday.”
The Bears looked to be cruising to the Capital Region early Saturday, leading by six after the first quarter, by 12 at halftime and by 17 entering the fourth quarter after Trocki’s stepback 3-pointer with 10 seconds left in the third.
“She played with a lot of confidence all game long. We were kind of hurting for a bucket at that moment,” Beaver said of her junior guard. “She knows when we are looking for a bucket, it’s really up to her to make a shot whether it’s off a screen or creating it on her own.”
The Tigers were just 1 of 12 from 3-point range in the opening 16 minutes.
“They don’t feel like a team that wants to shoot outside as much. … They tended to want to drive so we hoped that was the game plan they came in with and the shot was their second option,” Beaver said. “When you don’t look for it, you tend not to shoot it as well.”
But Keshequa didn’t go quietly, especially after Frewsburg’s Abery Harvey fouled out with 4:29 remaining in the game.
“In the fourth quarter, Abery went out and Lucy (Moore) got hurt. Jaden Jimerson was a little banged up as well,” Beaver said. “We had to survive, use the clock and lessen the amount of possession both teams had.”
Braelyn Isaman made it a 10-point game after bouncing an inbounds pass off Harvey’s back and then scoring through contact to make it 45-32 just after Harvey left the floor.
After a pair of Trocki free throws, Ryley Benner hit her third 3-pointer of the game and Isman followed with a layup while getting fouled to make it a 10-point game with 3:51 left.
When Benner scored with just over three minutes remaining, it was the first time the Tigers were within single digits since the score was 26-18 just after halftime.
“In the second half, we came out and said we’d break it into four four-minute sections and win all four. We knew they had streaks in all of their games where they got really hot,” Beaver said. “I told them at halftime they hadn’t had that yet. We knew they would go on a run, but we had to make sure it wasn’t something we couldn’t overcome.”
Trocki calmly sank another two foul shots for the Bears, but Riley Nageldinger’s lone 3-pointer of the game with 1:48 remaining made it a seven-point game. Keshequa had a chance to get even closer after a pair of missed free throws, but a turnover gave the ball back to Frewsburg.
From there, Jaden Jimerson, Trocki and Rozlyn Haglund sank the final eight foul shots of the game for the Bears to send them to suburban Albany for the third straight March.
“It’s a little surreal to be able to go three times in a row,” Beaver said.
NOTES: Harvey had 9 points and four rebounds while Elysse Gruber had nine rebounds and four steals for Frewsburg, which shot 18 of 52 from the field, including 7 of 17 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 13 times. … Benner had 13 points and Isaman had 12 for Keshequa, which shot 17 of 51 from the field, including 4 of 23 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 19 times. … The other side of the Class C bracket in Troy will feature Section II champion Greenwich against either Section I’s Tuckahoe or Section XI’s Pierson. Those two will play for a trip to Troy at noon today at Suffolk Community College.
