Gonzalez Shines After Halftime In Final Game At ‘The Mac’

When Quinten Wilhelm banked in a 3-pointer from half-court at the buzzer to end the first half of Wednesday afternoon’s nonleague basketball game at McElrath Gymnasium, Sweet Home walked to its locker room tied with Jamestown, 24-all.
Momentum Panthers, right?
Dominic Gonzalez put a stop to that.
In. A. Hurry.
Scoreless before the break, the senior guard poured in 14 points during a 21-10 third-quarter run to highlight Jamestown’s 59-49 victory.
And during those eight minutes, it was vintage Dom.
Floaters? Check.
3-pointers? Check.
Putbacks? Check.
Free throws? You betcha.
In his final career game at “the Mac,” Gonzalez put on a show after intermission, the kind spectators have grown accustomed to since he joined the varsity. At the final horn, his stat line read: 19 points, six rebounds, five assists, four steals and just one turnover.
When combined with 23 points, nine rebounds, four steals and two assists by senior forward Elijah Farmer, and 13 points and six rebounds by senior guard Gavin Johnson, the Red & Green were able to improve their record to 15-4 heading into tonight’s regular-season finale at Olean, their fifth game in the last week.
After that, it’s on to the Section VI Class AAA playoffs where Jamestown, the No. 2 seed, will take on third-seeded Niagara Falls (8-11) at 8:30 p.m. a week from today at Buffalo State. It’s a familiar locale spanning decades for the Red & Green, who have claimed the last two Class AAA crowns en route to the state final four each time.
“It will be a battle,” Jamestown head coach Billy Miley said. ” … Hopefully, we’ll be up to the challenge.”
Whether Jamestown can make it three sectional titles in a row remains to be seen, but it has to be reassuring for Miley that Gonzalez, Farmer and Johnson make up 60% of his starting lineup and have been part of a program that has posted a 55-13 record the last three seasons.
Given that level of success, it’s hardly surprising that individual accolades naturally come with it.
Thanks to his 19 points yesterday, Gonzalez is now No. 10 on the Red & Green’s all-time scoring list with 1,065. The nine people ahead of him include Maceo Wofford, Justin Johnson, Zack Panebianco, Jaydian Johnson, James Rojas, David Anderson, Carlos Rivera, Tommy Campion and Trey Drake. The No. 11 and No. 12 scorers — Mark Edstrom and Donn Johnston — reached iconic status and are still revered more than 50 years after their last games.
So now that Gonzalez has moved past Johnston and Edstrom in the last week, it might be just the right time to compare his game to the alums mentioned above. Tom Ames, the play-by-play voice of WJTN Radio for the last 30 years or so, suggested during his broadcast yesterday that Gonzalez’s unflappable demeanor is mindful of Panebianco, the star guard who never changed expression regardless of how things were going on the court.
That’s all Gonzalez has done. He just plays.
“He’s been that way since I had him in seventh grade,” Miley said. “You can’t really tell if you’re up a ton or down a ton. There have been a few times this year where I’ve seen him get overexcited on the court, but it’s more for a teammate’s success and not so much when he’s doing something great. That’s really good to see from a senior point-guard leader like that. You want to have that steady mental toughness throughout games, especially going into sectionals.”
