‘They’re Growing’

Jamestown Wins Again, Rolls Past Williamsville North

Would you like to learn more about a play that could easily run on a continuous loop on Jamestown girls basketball head coach Ken Ricker’s eventual season-ending highlight tape?

It occurred late in the second quarter of Friday night’s Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 game at McElrath Gymnasium.

Freshman Carley Daniels made one free throw, but missed the second. Senior Anna Engquist dove to the floor and alertly tapped the rebound out to freshman Nayani Reid, who stood all alone at the top of the key, behind the 3-point arc. Bang.

The trey keyed a 19-6 Red & Green run that ended the first half, propelling them to a 67-40 victory over Williamsville North.

The win raised Jamestown’s record to 9-5 overall and 5-5 in the league, while the Spartans dropped to 7-10 and 1-9.

Freshman Payton Gibbs led the Red & Green with 18 points, six rebounds and six assists; Reid scored 15 points and grabbed eight boards; and Engquist finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.

It was just the kind of effort that Ricker was hoping for in an evening when Engquist, Abbee Brandow and Jazmyn Tonkin were honored on Senior Night.

“It’s really nice to send them out on that note,” Ricker said.

By the break, Jamestown led 40-22, the margin growing to 55-32 after three quarters in what was an impressive performance.

“They’re growing and, really, I attribute it all to the fact they love each other,” Ricker said. “They will play hard for each other and encourage each other. A lot of teams can’t do that, and that’s because of the leadership of those three seniors.”

Jamestown, which knocked off Lancaster on Thursday night, will be back in action today at 5:30 when it travels to Randolph.

“Three games in three days for the second week in a row,” Ricker said.

NOTES: For the Spartans, Jayana Tape led the way with 11 points. … Williamsville North won the junior varsity game 51-45.
