RANDOLPH — The high-scoring games of the past few years have turned lower scoring this season as Randolph and Frewsburg have graduated much of their firepower.

On Thursday, the Bears’ pressure defense was too much for the Cardinals to handle.

Frewsburg forced Randolph into 22 turnovers, which led to 21 points at the other end of the floor, as the Bears swept the season series from the Cardinals with a 47-30 victory, in the process clinching the league title outright.

“They are the defending state champs and they have a lot of experience out here. We’re really young,” Randolph head coach David Pihlblad said. “I really liked the way my girls responded, fought back and didn’t make excuses. They kept battling for the whole game.”

Junior Jadyn Trocki led Frewsburg (13-2, 6-0) with 14 points and six steals to go along with seven rebounds and seven assists while senior Abery Harvey and sophomore Elysse Gruber combined for 25 points, 14 rebounds, seven steals and three blocked shots.

“We’ve been working on that inside action and Elysse being able to square up, knock down shots and go by people,” Frewsburg head coach Sierra Beaver said. “Abery … really felt good game all game, so that was helpful as well.”

The Bears led just 9-7 after the first quarter as it was the Cardinals (9-5, 4-3) forcing seven turnovers and scoring all seven of their points off of them at the other end of the floor.

But Frewsburg took a 20-11 lead into halftime as Randolph went 0 of 8 from 3-point range in the second quarter. The Cardinals finished the game just 4 of 23 from beyond the arc.

“We wanted to make sure we chased them off the line, didn’t give them anything easy and let them get comfortable,” Beaver said. “We didn’t want them to knock down a few in a row and get comfortable in that shot.”

Randolph made things interesting in the third quarter, twice cutting its deficit to three — on a 3-pointer from Tessa Brown and later a basket from Gianna Bowles — but a 9-2 Frewsburg run pushed the Bears’ lead back up to 10 before the Cardinals’ Ava Sears scored late in the period.

“I felt like the game slowed down in the third quarter and we went on a nice, little stretch there,” Pihlblad said. “Frewsburg is a really disciplined defense. They are long and don’t give you a lot of open looks. I feel like we did rush a couple of shots.”

Bowles hit a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter and make it 33-28, but Harvey answered with a 3-pointer to start a 12-0 run as Frewsburg put the game away.

“We tried to make it tough on Trocki and when we play those types of defenses, somebody is eventually going to get open. We hope we rebound really well and they have an off-night,” Pihlblad said. “They hit some shots down the stretch that helped win that game.”

Frewsburg has nonleague games against Cathedral Prep (Pa.), North Tonawanda and Sherman in the coming two weeks with its final two league games against Portville and Cassadaga Valley still upcoming. Every other Division 3 team already has at least three losses, so the Bears have clinched their third straight league title.

“I don’t think we’re quite ready yet, but I think we’re trending in the right direction,” Beaver said of her team’s readiness to compete in the upcoming playoffs. “They are super-hard workers, they take in everything. They learn quickly, so I think by the time we get there in a couple of more weeks, we’ll be ready.”
