LANCASTER — Anna Engquist made two free throws with five seconds remaining and Jamestown made a final defensive stop en route to a 44-41 victory over Lancaster in an Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 girls basketball game Thursday night.

“I’ve never had a team so excited for a win,” said Red & Green head coach Ken Ricker, who had lost 15 straight to the Legends. “It’s been a long time. … Anna gave me a hug when it was over, and nothing had to be said. We put the ball in her hands and she made the free throws.”

The victory raised Jamestown’s record to 8-5 overall and 4-5 in the division, while Lancaster dropped to 11-5 and 6-4.

The Red & Green led 14-6 after the first quarter, trailed 24-20 at halftime and then led again 36-31 after three quarters, setting the stage for a tight final period.

“It was such a gutty win,” Ricker said. “Today was a big hurdle. We were short-handed, out of breath, out of gas and we found a way.”

Payton Gibbs led Jamestown with 11 points, Engquist added 10 and Nayani Reid came off the bench to pull down 11 rebounds, including six offensive, and collect five steals.

Arrianna McMahon led the Legends with 10 points and Reese Booker chipped in 9.

The Red & Green are back in action today when they entertain Williamsville North. Varsity tip is at 7:30 p.m.
