Randolph Stymies Eden 50-35 In B2 Quarterfinal

RANDOLPH — Syrai Johnson scored 8 points during a 19-8 first quarter and No. 3 Randolph never looked back on its way to a 50-35 win over No. 6 Eden in a Class B2 quarterfinal.

Johnson finished with 20 points while Kevin McElwain added 9 for the Cardinals, who will take on No. 2 Akron in a 2 p.m. semifinal Sunday at Fredonia State University.

Randolph led 31-15 at halftime and 44-23 heading into the final eight minutes Tuesday.

Silas Nellis led the Raiders with 11 points and Kobe Genco had 9.

AKRON JUMPS AHEAD EARLY

AKRON — A 16-2 first quarter was a sign of things to come as No. 2 Akron beat No. 7 Falconer 68-34 in a Class B2 quarterfinal.

Derren Brooks scored 8 of his game-high 24 points in the opening eight minutes as the Tigers built a 14-point lead. Benjamin Gerstung added 13 points, including a pair of Akron’s 10 3-pointers.

The Tigers will take on No. 3 Randolph in the 2 p.m. semifinal Sunday at Fredonia State University.

Max Parmentier led Falconer with 16 points and D’Mitri Carlson chipped in 12 on Tuesday.

SOUTHWESTERN UPSETS TOP SEED

BUFFALO — Jalen Edwards hit three 3-pointers during the third quarter to help No. 9 Southwestern pull away from No. 1 Middle Early College for a 65-54 Class B1 quarterfinal victory.

Landon Hooks led the Trojans with 15 points and Edwards had 14 while Roger Markham had 11 points and 11 assists. Colton Waite added 10 points and Oscar Harris had 9.

Southwestern will take on No. 5 Medina in the 4 p.m. semifinal Saturday at Fredonia State University. The Mustangs beat No. 4 Alden 53-35 in another Tuesday quarterfinal.

Jaden Clark led Middle Early College with 15 points while Carl Barnes, Anthony Johnson and Adriaon Little had 12 apiece.

OLMSTED TAKES OVER IN 3RD QUARTER

BUFFALO — Tacari McCray scored 11 of his 16 points during the third quarter as No. 2 Olmsted rallied past No. 7 Salamanca for a 49-34 win in a Class B1 quarterfinal.

The Warriors led 13-9 after the first quarter and 20-19 at halftime before the Owls outscored Salamanca 21-6 in the third quarter.

Jaden Wood also had 16 points for Olmsted, which will take on No. 3 East in a 6 p.m. semifinal Saturday at Fredonia State University.

Payton Bradley led Salamanca with 14 points and Adrian Taylor had 12.

PANAMA GETS BALANCED SCORING

PANAMA — Four players scored in double figures as No. 4 Panama coasted past No. 5 Franklinville 70-29 in a Class D quarterfinal.

Michael Horton led Panama with 15 points to go along with six rebounds, five assists and three steals; Konner Morgan had 13 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists; Kiedon Graves had 13 points and five rebounds; and Johnny Abers had 10 points and three assists. Wyatt Eggleston chipped in six assists and four steals.

“I really wanted us to move the ball and find the open guy while attacking the gaps. It really showed tonight,” Panama head coach Josh Nelson said. “It was huge to get everybody to score and show up, and play the way I know that they can play.”

Panama will take on No. 1 Clymer in the 6 p.m. semifinal Monday at Jamestown Community College. The Pirates won by 10 and by six during the regular season.

“Our team, we’ve been saying it all along, we wanted both of those games back because they were so close,” Nelson said.

Mason Blecha led Franklinville with 17 points Tuesday.

FORESTVILLE — William Duliba scored 12 points in the first half and Jacob Anders added 9 during the third quarter as No. 3 Forestville pulled away from No. 6 Pine Valley for a 79-45 Class D quarterfinal win.

Duliba led the Hornets with 23 points, Anders had 18 and Blake Waterman had 13.

“At the start of the third quarter, we had three steals in a row and converted them into layups,” Forestville head coach Ralph Jackson said. “That was a big way to start the second half for us.”

The Hornets will take on No. 2 Sherman in the 7:45 p.m. semifinal Monday at Jamestown Community College. The teams split a pair of regular-season meetings with Sherman winning 58-52 and Forestville winning 70-53.

James Greene led Pine Valley with 23 points Tuesday.

CATTARAUGUS — Donovan Hefferon, Carter Dersarkissian and Anthony Taliaferro scored all of No. 12 Barker’s points during a 25-12 third quarter as the Bulldogs pulled away from No. 5 Cattaraugus-Little Valley for a 72-45 Class C prequarterfinal victory.

Hefferon finished with 21 points, Taliaferro had 19 and Dersarkissian had 16 for Barker, which will travel to No. 4 Westfield for a 7 p.m. quarterfinal Thursday.

Tucker Barrick led the Timberwolves with 20 points and Owen Wright had 8.

EAGLES DOWN RED DRAGONS

ELLICOTTVILLE — No. 6 Ellicottville bolted to a 19-7 lead after the first quarter en route to a 58-47 victory over No. 11 Maple Grove in a Class C prequarterfinal.

Blake Smith led the way for the Eagles (14-7) with 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals; AJ Myers added 16 points, seven boards, five assists and three steals; and Rylan Benjamin collected 12 points, five rebounds and two steals.

“I thought we came out with a lot of energy in the first quarter, and really in the first half defensively,” Ellicottville coach Dave McCann said. “We forced them into a lot of rushed shots and … I thought we did a pretty good job on their big guys.”

At halftime, the Eagles led 31-13 and then kept the Red Dragons at bay in the latter stages with excellent free-throw shooting.

Leading the way for Maple Grove were Jack Reynolds with 12 points and Liam Colburn with 11.

Ellicottville will travel to No. 3 Gowanda on Thursday for a quarterfinal game.
