ALBANY — Southwestern’s Adrian Torres made his first trip to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association intersectional championships last season as a junior and reached the 101-pound final in Division II, falling by a 5-1 decision in what was a very close championship match.
In one final trip to the state championships, Torres (38-9) is the No. 3 seed at 110 pounds on the opposite side of the bracket of the person who gave him his last loss a year ago, top-seed Declan McKee (38-2) of Section IV Tioga.
In the way of a rematch for all the glory, Torres will await the winner between No. 19 Karem Saleh (25-2) of Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy and No. 14 Coda Clifford (27-3) of Section X Canton. Torres could likely find himself in a sectional final rematch during the semifinals against No. 2 Mason DellaPenta of Eden/North Collins, while Dansville/Wayland/Cohocton’s Wyatt Sartori (38-0) is the No. 4 seed on the other side.
Torres is just one of four Trojans with podium expectations and among 13 local wrestlers heading to Albany this Friday for the state championships.
Southwestern senior Carmine Calimeri will look to reach a state podium for the fifth time in his career and he comes in as the No. 5 seed at 138 pounds, expected to achieve that accomplishment. Calimeri (36-7) will first await the winner of No. 21 Jonathan Ulloa (20-7) out of Section VIII Oyster Bay and No. 12 Jayden Acomb (33-7) of Section II Ravena/Coeymans/Selkirk.

Calimeri is likely on a collision course with No. 4 seed Justin D’Arce (40-4) of Center Moriches in the quarterfinals, while the top seed in the bracket is Section IV Deposit/Hancock junior Landyn Shaffer (42-1).
Tavio Hoose is the final Southwestern senior looking to end his high school career on a high note, having the potential to reach the top of the podium again like he did his freshman year.
After beginning his season with St. Francis, Hoose is back at Southwestern and in a final run at states is the No. 4 seed in the 190-pound bracket. Just two years ago he was the top seed in the bracket and dropped a close final, but to get back to that point he will have to begin with the winner of No. 13 Jackson Peet (35-1) of Section V Caledonia/Mumford and No. 20 Jerry Lapage (24-7) of Section X Malone. Hoose is likely to find himself in a rematch of the sectional final against Falconer/Cassadaga Valley junior Patrick Braley (40-5), whom he defeated by 17-5 major decision.
The top seed at 190 pounds is the third-place finisher from last year, undefeated Yanni Drapaniotis (40-0) of Section IV Unatego/Unadilla Valley, while the runnerup last year, Trent True (47-1) of Holland Patent, is the No. 2 seed.
Braley finished eighth on the podium last year as a sophomore and is expected to go higher with his billing as the No. 5 seed. He will take on the winner of No. 21 Benjamin Rivera (26-11) of Section XI Port Jervis and No. 12 Sam Fabian (35-2) of Port Jefferson.
Miles Torres can be a part of a possible four out of four Trojans on the podium this weekend, looking to start better than last year, but finish just as strong when he surged to a fourth-place finish at 108 pounds as a sophomore.
Going up to 118 pounds, Torres is the No. 7 seed and will begin his tournament against No. 10 Jonah Stevens (34-6) of Section II Salem/Cambridge. A victory there sets up a possible rematch against No. 2 seed Mason Tanner of Section III Jordan-Elbridge, who defeated him in the third-place match at 108 pounds last year with a 13-1 major decision. On the other side of the bracket is top seed Andrew Juliano (42-5) of Section III Holland-Patent, who finished second at 108 pounds last year.
Falconer/Cassadaga Valley junior Dylan Newman will look to make it two for two with the Golden Cougars earning spots on the podium and he has the opportunity to grab a patch for a second straight year after finishing sixth at 124 pounds last year. However, it will take a little work with him seeded at No. 10 with an opening matchup against No. 7 Kadin Cole (29-9) of Section IV Tioga. A victory there would likely set up Newman (39-8) with a match against No. 2 seed Jake Burton (37-9) of Section III Marcellus-Onondaga in the quarterfinals.
Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer could also have multiple podium placements. Eyeing his first patch is junior Thandon Bensink, who is making his third trip to states, but for the first time as a sectional champion. Bensink is the No. 7 seed at 132 pounds and will begin his tournament against No. 10 Jason Canedo (41-10) of Deposit/Hancock. A win there also sets Bensink (35-5) up with a quarterfinal matchup against a No. 2 seed in Section II Hudson Falls senior Justin Mullis (16-0).
Last season, Mullis was the runnerup at 131 pounds, falling to bracket’s top seed senior Christopher Noto (43-2) of Section V Honeoye Falls-Lima.
Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer sophomore Alex Bourgeois also captured his first sectional title for the Eagles and will be making his first trip to states at 144 pounds. With an upset victory in the sectional tournament, Bourgeois (29-9) will need to bust another couple brackets for a spot on the podium wrestling as the No. 12 seed.
Bourgeois begins in the first-round match against No. 21 Diego Villacis (27-10) of Section VIII North Shore and with a win gets No. 5 Cyler Baer (37-4) of Section X Gouverneur.
Bourgeois upset Gowanda/Pine Valley senior Nathan Warrior in the sectional final, but Warrior still earned a better seed at No. 11. Warrior also has a first-round match in which he is favored against No. 22 Caden Bradley (21-15) of Section IV Tioga and a win sets up a match against No. 6 James Chase (36-3) of Section V Avon/Geneseo.
The top seed of the 144-pound bracket is Penn State-commit Gavin Mangano (43-2) of Section XI Shoreham/Wading River, who is currently ranked the No. 15 wrestler nationally by FloWrestling at 145 pounds.
Colton Hamilton won his True Second match at sectionals to secure the final Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer spot at states and enters the tournament as the No. 15 seed at 215 pounds with an opening bout against No. 18 Hudson Garbarino (27-1) of Section I Pawling. If Hamilton (32-7) earns the victory he will go up against No. 2 Gianni Velazquez of Section V Geneva. Velazquez (35-3) dropped down a weight class after finishing sixth at 285 pounds last year.
Salamanca sophomore Karen Hardy captured the sectional title at 285 pounds and comes with a high ranking at No. 4, waiting for his prequarterfinal opponent, which will be either No. 13 Lincoln Cha (28-9) of Section VIII Cold Spring Harbor or No. 20 Brian Lennon (26-6) of Section I Nanuet. Hardy (36-4) is favored to eventually meet top seed Jim Biccum (37-3) of Section III South Jefferson in the semifinals. Biccum returns after taking seventh on the podium last year.
Section V Waverly senior Troy Beeman (34-5) is the No. 3 seed and looking to get back to the top of the podium after being upset in a controversial ending for a chance to repeat as the 285-pound champion last year, losing in the final seconds to Wilson’s Hamza Merrick.
At the lowest weight, Randolph senior Kamren Anderson is looking to make some noise as the No. 14 seed at 103 pounds. Anderson (31-4) has a first-round match against No. 19 Alyn Capen (19-9) of Section VII Peru and the winner goes against No. 3 seed Connor Duyrea (37-2) of Section V Avon/Geneseo.
Jamestown junior Aaden Howard is the lone local wrestler competing in the Division I tournament, making his states debut as the No. 21 seed at 132 pounds. Howard (31-13) is stacked up against No. 12 Chase Allocca (38-8) of Section I Carmel in his first-round match and the winner will advance to a prequarterfinal against No. 5 James Nalbone (40-4) of Section II Bethlehem.
The boys tournament begins on Friday morning at 10 a.m. at MVP Arena in Albany and wraps up on Saturday with action beginning in the morning and leading to the finals at 6:05 p.m.
