Mays Wins Pair Of Section VI Indoor T&F Titles For Marauders, Verbosky, Kraft Finish First For F/MG/CV/F/R

HOUGHTON — Area high school indoor track & field athletes showed plenty of heart on Valentine’s Day at the Section VI Team Championships at Houghton University.
Following are those who finished in the top five places:
BOYS
MAYS LEADS WAY
Nathan Mays, representing the Dunkirk squad in the Medium Division, was the headliner, winning the high jump (6 feet, 0 inches) and the pole vault (12-4), and claiming third in the long jump (21-1) to help the Marauders to a seventh-place finish with 43 points.
Falconer/Maple Grove/Cassadaga Valley/Frewsburg/Randolph turned in a big day in the boys Medium Division, too.
Claiming first places were Ethan Verbosky in the 1,000 meters (2:34.94), Ty Kraft in the 600 meters (1:25.36) and the 4×400-meter relay of Verbosky, Kraft, Rhys Kelly and Noah Erickson (3:39.48). The Golden Falcons finished in sixth place as a team with 44 points.
Other area boys first-place finishers were Dunkirk’s Samuel Bowers, who crossed the finish line in 36.49 in the 300 meters in the Medium Division; and Jamestown’s Beckett Lumia in the 300 meters (35.38) in the Large Division. The Red & Green placed fourth as a team with 63.5 points.
The lone second-place finisher was Jamestown’s 4×200-meter relay (1:36.81) in the Large Division.
The third-place finishers were Clevon Wofford of Jamestown in the Large Division 1,600 meters (4:40.61); Evan Spruce of Salamanca in the Small Division shot put (36-10.25); Jorge Rivera Jr. of Jamestown in the Large Division high jump (5-8, tied); and Tyler Tellez of Jamestown in the Large Division pole vault (11-0).
Placing fourth were Xazavier Escobar of Salamanca in the Small Division 55 meters (6.81); Easton Chudy of Salamanca in the Small Division pole vault (10-0); Troy Keefe of Jamestown in both the Large Division weight throw (46-5) and shot put (42-4.75); and Gavin Kent of Falconer/Maple Grove/Cassadaga Valley/Frewsburg/Randolph in the Medium Division high jump (5-2).
Finally, the fifth-place finishers were Noah Erickson of Falconer/Maple Grove/Cassadaga Valley/Frewsburg/Randolph in the Medium Division 600 meters (1:29.63) and teammate Chaos Hedges in the high jump (5-2).
GIRLS
MORRIS PLACES FIRST
The lone first-place finisher among the girls was Jordan Morris of Fredonia, who captured the weight throw with a toss of 37-0.
Placing second were Brea Rubrecht of Falconer/Maple Grove/Cassadaga Valley/Frewsburg/Randolph in the shot put (30-4.25) in the Medium Division; and Mariella Russo of Fredonia in the Small Division high jump (4-10).
Third-place finishes belonged to Rubrecht in the Medium Division weight throw (33-11.5); Dunkirk’s Medium Division 4×400-meter relay (4:25.56); and Dunkirk’s Hanan Mohamad Narvaez in the Medium Division 1,500 meters (5:09.41).
Placing fourth were Morris in the Small Division shot put (29-0.75); Emily Bain of Dunkirk in the Medium Division 600 meters (1:47.62); Leah Mays of Dunkirk in the Medium Division 1,500 meters (5:19.51); Dunkirk’s Medium Division 4×200-meter relay (1:40.23); Dunkirk’s Jazmin Bultron in the Medium Division pole vault (7-0); Salamanca’s Arleigh Chudy (tied) in the Small Division pole vault (6-0); and Kadence Durow of Falconer/Maple Grove/Cassadaga Valley/Frewsburg/Randolph in the Medium Division 1,000 meters 3:39.79.
Lucy Hockenberry of Jamestown was fifth in the Large Division pole vault (7-0).
