Johnson, Gonzalez Propel JHS To Victory
OLEAN — The Jamestown boys basketball team closed out its regular season with a 71-49 nonleague win over Olean at Olean High School on Thursday night.
Senior Gavin Johnson led the way with 23 points and senior Dominic Gonzalez added 19 to help the Red & Green, who were playing their fifth game in seven days, claim their ninth victory in their last 10 outings to improve to 16-4 on the season.
The outcome was never in doubt as Jamestown limited the Huskies (14-6) to four first-half field goals and led 39-11 at intermission. The margin grew to as many as 39 points with three minutes to go in the third quarter before both teams cleared their benches.
Johnson and Gonzalez combined to shoot 15 of 24 from the floor, including 9 of 13 from the arc. Johnson also added three rebounds, two assists, a steal and a blocked shot, while Gonzalez finished with three rebounds, two assists, four steals and one block. Senior Elijah Farmer added 9 points, 10 boards, three assists, three blocks and two steals.
For Olean, Mykel Rivera led the way with 17 points, Taylor Teachman had 15 and Dominick Myers chipped in 10, all in the fourth quarter.
The Red & Green, the No. 2 seed in the Section VI Class AAA playoffs, will be back in action at 8:30 p.m. next Thursday when they take on No. 3 Niagara Falls in the semifinals at Buffalo State.
The seventh-seeded Huskies, meanwhile, will open their postseason at noon Saturday when they entertain No. 10 Albion (10-9) in the Class A1 quarterfinals.
