FREWSBURG — Prior to Tuesday evening’s Section VI Class C prequarterfinal, Devin Pope told Asher Olson and Trent Houser they were due for big games.
Chautauqua Lake’s head coach couldn’t have been more right.
Olson had 17 points and nine rebounds while Houser added just 6 points, but had eight rebounds and four assists as the 10th-seeded Eagles dominated the paint en route to a 63-33 win over No. 7 Frewsburg at Frewsburg Middle/High School.
“Before the game I told Trent and Asher, we go as far as they go today. If they want to come out here, crash the glass hard, bully inside and be physical, we’ll win the game easily. If not, we’ll be in a battle,” Pope said postgame. “I’m super proud of both of them because they showed up tonight.”
Next up for Chautauqua Lake is a road test at No. 2 Global Concepts on Thursday at 7 p.m. The teams have met in Mayville in each of the past two postseasons with the Eagles winning both times.

The Bears actually led 6-2 early Tuesday, but missed their final nine shots of the first quarter while Chautauqua Lake went on a 13-0 run that included 7 points from Carson Fairbank and 6 from Olson.
The Eagles led 15-6 after the opening eight minutes and 35-20 at halftime. Chautauqua Lake shot 15 of 25 from the field in the first two quarters, including 12 of 14 from 2-point range. Most of the Eagles’ damage was done against a 1-3-1 zone that Frewsburg has employed for much of the season.
“I was nervous about the 1-3-1 because those guys play hard,” Pope said of the Bears. “Every game we’ve watched, they are on the floor, they’re getting 50-50 balls, they’re doing all the things necessary to hold teams to low numbers.”
“This was similar to games we’ve had in the past where we gave up looks that we shouldn’t have given up in our defense. We didn’t have active hands at all times, which we knew we’d have to do against this team,” Frewsburg head coach Kyle Nelson said. “They attacked it well. Credit to Devin for having a good game plan against it.”
Chautauqua Lake won a sloppy third quarter by a point and then put the game away with a 20-7 final eight minutes.
“I thought that was our best defensive performance we’ve had the entire year between rebounding, getting deflections, swarming,” Pope said. ” … It paid off.”
Fairbank finished with 14 points and four rebounds while Nick Jacobson had 13 points, seven assists and two steals.
“I thought we matched up well. I thought we could do well on the inside with our two bigs. We were patient with the ball … we were getting good looks,” Pope said. ” … The boys did what they had to do, stayed patient and got open looks.”
Trent Lewis led the Bears with 12 points to go along with four steals and four assists..
“In the first half, we had a lot of uncharacteristic turnovers,” Nelson said. “In the second half, we started taking care of the ball better and getting open looks, but it was too late and we didn’t knock them down.”
Now the Eagles will look to return to a semifinal at Jamestown Community College for the first time since Pope’s senior year in 2018. They’ll need to beat the Gators on Thursday to achieve that goal.
“The last time (Global Concepts head coach Joe Scarsella) talked to me leaving Chautauqua Lake, he said, ‘How about you come to us next year,'” Pope said. “They’re big, they’re fast. We’ll have to play our ‘A’ game.”
NOTES: Joey Abuhmeidan had three assists for Chautauqua Lake, which shot 27 of 56 from the field, including 5 of 19 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 17 times. … Drake Beckstrom had five rebounds and three steals while Isaac Hultberg had five steals and three assists for Frewsburg, which shot 13 of 47 from the field, including 4 of 23 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 24 times.
