‘Intensity’ Sends Trojans Past Falconer In Class B Playoff

Southwestern needed exactly four seconds to score its first field goal in Saturday afternoon’s Section VI Class B prequarterfinal girls basketball game.

The Trojans didn’t take their figurative foot off the gas the rest of the way.

Led by eighth-grader Gianna Sirianni’s 17 points, five players scored in double figures as No. 2 Southwestern rolled past No. 15 Falconer 75-36.

The victory advances the Trojans (14-7) into a home quarterfinal at 6 p.m. Wednesday against No. 10 Alden, a 57-26 winner over No. 7 Performing Arts. The Golden Falcons, meanwhile, end their season 7-14.

Southwestern, which was coming off losses in three of their last four games to end the regular season, will be tough to beat if it plays like it did in the weekend matinee.

“They were excited,” Trojans head coach Kay Sirianni said. “It was their first playoff game and they came out with intensity.”

The Trojans wasted little time fining its comfort zone, racing to a 24-8 lead after the first quarter and they never looked back. Joining Gianna Sirianni in double figures were junior Marlana Cresanti and eighth-grader Jada Edwards with 16 points apiece, sophomore Charlotte Beaver with 13 and senior Braya Beaver with 10.

It was just the kind of start Southwestern head coach Kay Sirianni had been hoping for coming off a session earlier in the week when offense was a particular point of emphasis.

“We actually practiced a drill,” Coach Sirianni said, “where we put eight minutes on the clock and I asked, ‘How many points can you score?'”

When the horn sounded, the Trojans had put up 37.

“We wanted to bring the energy early,” Coach Sirianni added.

The Trojans’ defense was pretty good, too. By halftime, Southwestern led 41-15 and, after three quarters, its advantage had grown to 54-23, allowing it to cruise to its third win over Falconer this season.

“You can’t ever underestimate a team,” Coach Sirianni said. “It doesn’t matter if you have beaten them twice. Falconer plays hard, so we knew we had to come with some energy. … Hopefully we’re peaking at the right time.”

For the Golden Falcons, Sydnee Snow led the way with 10 points and Ellyson Baglia had 8.

“(Southwestern) started hot,” Falconer head coach Emma Steele said. “They made every shot (early) and tips were going their way. It was not our first quarter. When the deficit is that bad and you have to rally the rest of the game, you can’t keep up.”

But, Steele said she told her team to not “hang your heads. Be proud that you stuck it out and fought through everything that was against you this year.”

NOTES: Statistically for the Trojans, Gianna Sirianni finished with five assists, four rebounds and two steals; Cresanti grabbed nine rebounds; Edwards had seven rebounds, four assists and four steals; and Charlotte Beaver and Braya Beaver added seven and six rebounds respectively.
