FREWSBURG — It’s every basketball player’s dream.
The clock is winding down, the game is on the line and teammates, as well as fans in the bleachers, are looking to you to make a play. You take a quick peek at the hoop and let the ball fly.
If it goes in, you’re the hero.
Saturday afternoon one could make an argument there were two heroes, but only one left the gym with an ear-to-ear grin.
Take a bow, Natalie Spano.

The Cathedral Prep senior nailed a 3-pointer at the overtime horn to send the Ramblers to a dramatic 54-53 nonleague victory over Frewsburg at Frewsburg Middle/High School. The shot — taken off an inbounds pass from junior teammate Seana Thrower — spoiled a go-ahead trey from the top of the key at the other end of the court by Bears’ junior Jadyn Trocki seconds earlier.
In a game of “can you top this?” Cathedral Prep (14-3), the second-ranked Class 5A school in Pennsylvania, came out the winner to complete a sweep of the home-and-home series against Frewsburg (13-3), the top-ranked Class C team in New York and the defending state champion.
“What an incredible high school basketball game,” Ramblers’ head coach Doug Chuzie said. “It was a great atmosphere, a great experience. Two class programs that respect each other and that play the game clean and hard.”
Spano, who missed all of last season with a shoulder injury, led the Rambers with 18 points, including the clutch game winner.
“I think Natalie earned that in the offseason,” Chuzie said. “What an ending.”
Freshman Leah Nies added 16 points for Cathedral Prep, including 13 in the fourth quarter and overtime; and freshman Mia Washburn had 11.
Trocki, who became the program’s all-time career scoring leader, paced Frewsburg with 20 points; and senior teammate Abery Harvey chipped in 17.
The Bears led a good share of the way — 16-11 after the first quarter, 29-20 at halftime, 35-32 after three periods and 41-34 with just over six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter — but Nies scored 10 points during the rest of regulation, including a game-tying 3-pointer with 19 seconds left, which ultimately sent the contest to the extra session.
“She comes from a family of basketball players,” Chuzie said of Nies. “She lives for moments like that.”
Frewsburg head coach Sierra Beaver, who saw the Ramblers breeze past the Bears 55-25 in Erie on Jan. 27, said she welcomes the opportunity to play tough nonleague opponents.
“We schedule these games so we can get this experience,” she said.
It was a totally different set of circumstances, however, than 11 days earlier.
In overtime, Nies’ traditional three-point play gave the Ramblers a 51-48 advantage a minute in, but neither team scored again until Trocki was fouled attempting a 3-pointer from the corner with 20.6 seconds remaining. She made two of three free-throw attempts to cut the deficit to 51-50. After Cathedral Prep missed a pair of charity tosses on its ensuing possession, Beaver called a timeout at the 9.2-second mark to diagram a potential game-tying 3-pointer.
Trocki delivered.
Inbounding the ball from in front of the Bears’ bench, sophomore Jaden Jimerson passed to Harvey, who eventually found Trocki at the top of the key. With the game clock at about 4 seconds, the talented guard let fly with a deep trey that hit nothing but net.
“As soon as Jadyn took that shot and it went off her hand, I knew it was in,” Chuzie said. “She’s earned that with all of the time and energy and effort she’s put in through the years.”
That prompted Chuzie to call timeout with 1.6 seconds remaining.
“I talked about the same thing in our huddle,” he said. “I told them, ‘We’ve earned the chance to do this right now.'”
And the Ramblers did.
Standing on the sideline about 5 feet from the foul line extended, Thrower inbounded to Spano, who took one dribble and lofted a 3-pointer that fell through the hoop as time expired.
“I think we did everything we could have done and should have done (defensively),” Beaver said. ” … As soon as it left her hand, I turned around and said, ‘That’s in.’ I could tell by the trajectory that it was going in.”
It was that kind of afternoon.
“That is a SportsCenter moment,” Chuzie said with a smile. “Maybe we’ll turn that in.”
NOTES: In addition to passing Gabby Iuculano and Shawna Raymond on Frewsburg’s career scoring list — the duo had shared the record — Trocki finished with five assists, three rebounds and four steals. She was presented a commemorative ball after the game in honor of the milestone. “She puts a lot of time in, works hard and is really unselfish,” Beaver said. “For a player who is as good as she is, this is a record she could have gotten 10 or 12 games (faster), but she plays her role, does what we need her to do. I’m glad to see her get that.” … Sophomore Elysse Guber grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, Harvey had seven and Jimerson added six. … Cathedral Prep shot 12 of 15 from the foul line compared to 10 of 18 for Frewsburg. … The Bears will be back in action today at Portville. The Ramblers, meanwhile, entertain Warren Area (Pa.) High School.
