ALBANY — When Southwestern’s Tavio Hoose was a freshman he took the state by storm as a 6-seed winning the 172-pound Division 2 state championship in a narrow 5-4 decision over Greyson Meak of Cold Spring Harbor-VIII.
It looked as if it could be the first of many state championships for Hoose, but the following season he was upset by Meak in the 190-pound finals and then his junior season while at St. Francis he suffered an MCL injury and was upset in the Catholic High School Athletic Association championship.
Earlier this season he left St. Francis and it looked like that could be the end of his high school wrestling career, but he had the opportunity to come back home, to finish with Southwestern.
After dominant wrestling on Friday and a methodical victory in the semifinals on Saturday afternoon, Hoose found himself in the 190-pound Division 2 state final of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association wrestling championships at MVP Arena in Albany.
Going up against Liam English of Berne-Knox-Westerlo/Middlesex-II, Hoose relived a match similar to his freshman year, coming from behind in the third period with a takedown to secure a massive 6-4 decision and go out a champion with Southwestern.

“It feels good to be a Trojan,” Hoose said after winning the state title. “Lord knows that wasn’t my best match and I’ve got to give all glory to my two amazing coaches (John Vogan and Dylan Lundmark), the guys down in PA that help me out, the amazing superintendent at Southwestern, Molly Moore, for helping me make the transfer. Along with (Matt) Kindberg and Mr. Salisbury. A two-time state champ for Southwestern feels good.”
Scoreless after the first period, it was English getting points through an escape and a takedown in the second to take a 4-0 lead. For some that may have been too far a deficit to overcome on such a grand stage.
However, with an escape before the end of the second and then another to start the third it set the table for Hoose to seal the deal in the same fashion as his freshman season.
“I honestly felt like I was living deja vu all over again,” Southwestern head coach John Vogan said. “It was an exact repeat of his first state title, it was exact. With 30 or 40 seconds left he’s down, gets it on a shoulder shot, comes out on top of a scramble and finishes on top with seconds left. It was like literally identical the script of the match. I told him when they went out of bounds with 40 seconds left ‘you’ve been here before, do it again’ and it materialized.”
Hoose still needed his takedown in the final minute of the match and with English stalling he inched a little closer making the score 4-3 with 28 seconds left and then can his move.

Just after the stalling penalty, Hoose shot after English and had him in trouble as he was able to gain control for the takedown to vault himself ahead 6-4 with just 15 seconds left, firmly in control of his opponent.
“I was confident the whole match that I was going to come out on top,” Hoose said. “I didn’t wrestle definitely the way I needed to, I should have tech’d him and that’s shoulda woulda coulda, but we got it done. The people I’m most grateful for are my mom and dad.”
English wrestled a strong half of the match, but the long game of Hoose came out in the end as he was able to go out a champion at home with Southwestern.
“It feels great,” Hoose said about finishing with Southwestern. “You finish where you started off freshman year. I’ve been wrestling varsity for Southwestern since seventh grade. Winning a second state title for them is a huge deal to me, I really can’t say how grateful I am. It feels good, it’s very meaningful to me.”
It wasn’t just Hoose’s last match with the Trojans, but Head Coach John Vogan ends his time with the team, stepping down to spend more time with his family and he does so as state champion.

“I’m super happy for him,” Vogan said. “He’s come back to Southwestern his senior year, to pull this off and win another state title it’s amazing, I can’t even, I’m probably happier than he is. … I can’t imagine a better way to go out. This whole group started together and they’ve all come up the last six years together through our program, our youth program, our modified program, our varsity program. There has just been so much history created by this group of kids, we’ve had one of the best runs in Southwestern history … it’s just a really special group of kids.”

Fellow Southwestern senior Adrian Torres did not fare as well in his championship earlier in the evening when he fought in his long awaited rematch with Tioga-IV junior Declan McKee at 110 pounds in Division 2.
After a scoreless period it looked as if the match was destined for another low scoring affair like a year ago in the 103-pound championship match, but then things started to go in McKee’s favor.
McKee opened the second period with an escape and then in the middle of the period, Torres was penalized for a headbutt putting him at 2-0 deficit. Heading into the third Torres was going to have to earn more than an escape if he wanted to win or extend the contest.

Then early in the third period matters were made worse when McKee earned another point with a stalling penalty against Torres with just over a minute left in the match.
“He got penalized for a headbutt and they were just wrestling,” Vogan said. “Adrian would never headbutt a kid, I’ve never seen him get a penalty for head butting a kid in six years coaching him. Sometimes calls don’t go your way and there is nothing you can do.”
Desperately needing to get out of McKee’s control, Torres was only worn down further as the reigning state champion rolled him into two near falls to build a commanding 10-0 lead in the final minute.
In the final seconds, McKee released Torres for the 10-1 major decision to secure a second straight title.
“He left it all out on the mat,” Vogan said about the match. “He wrestled hard. It wasn’t his day, but he had a great tournament and an unbelievable two years.”

While it ends in heartbreak again, Torres for the second year in a row is able to ascend to the runner-up spot on the podium at the state championships.
“I’m super proud of Adrian,” Vogan stated. “He wrestled a great tournament. The semifinal match was just unbelievable to come back and beat Mason (DellaPenta). It’s an honor to get here once, it’s an honor to place in this tournament, it’s an unbelievable honor to make it to the finals and to be a finalist two years in a row it’s an experience he’ll look back on and really remember fondly after some time passes.”

After two years of missing the podium at the state tournament, Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer junior Thandon Bensink will finally make the podium.
As the 7-seed of the 132-pound Division 2 bracket, Bensink was bounced in his opening match against prequarterfinal opponent No. 10 Jason Canedo of Deposit/Hancock-IV in a 9-2 decision.
However, that was not the end of the road for him as he entered the gauntlet in the consolation bracket, keeping the dream of the podium alive.
Putting together a pair of victories including a 5-3 decision against Bradley Munoz of Petrides and then a technical fall over Connor Murphy of Seaford-VIII to end Friday night.
Then in his blood match on Saturday morning it was back to the grind against Mason Butler of Camden-III. Bensink managed to clinch himself a guaranteed spot on the podium when he squeaked out of the contest with a 3-2 decision.
Bensink lost the following match in a 21-1 technical fall against Cole Clifford of Canton-X, placing him in the seventh-place match against Zakk Larue of Copenhagen-III.
The Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer junior ended the year on the podium for the first time with an eighth place finish after losing in a 9-2 decision to Larue.
Making his states debut, Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer teammate Colton Hamilton joined Bensink on the podium after he pulled off a victory in his blood match of the 215-pound Division 2 consolation bracket against Mason Eckelman of Lowville-III.
Hamilton was in control his entire match against Mason Eckelman of Lowville-III and secured a second-period pin at 2:46 to guarantee himself a spot on the podium Saturday night.
Hamilton was also relegated to the seventh-place match after being pinned by Matthias Welles of Waverly-IV in 39 seconds, setting up a final match of the season with Hudson Garbarino of Pawling-I.
Defeating Garbarino with a pin in the opening round of the tournament, Hamilton was able to replicate that success with an 8-4 decision to take seventh place at 215 pounds.
After losing the 126-pound Division 2 final against Brock Frederick of South Jefferson-III for the second year in a row, Falconer/Cassadaga Valley junior Dylan Newman found himself in the fifth place match for a consecutive season.
Following the pin by Frederick, Newman came up just short to Aiden Lee of John Glenn-XI in a 10-9 decision to be bumped into the fifth place match. However, this year he was able to get the job done and move up one spot on the podium with the 8-6 win over Kadin Cole of Tioga-IV for fifth place.
While Bensink and Hamilton went the long way to the podium, local quarterfinalists Patrick Braley of Falconer/Cassadaga Valley, Miles Torres of Southwestern and Kasen Hardy of Salamanca won their blood matches on Saturday morning for a spot on the podium.
Torres scored five points in the final period of his match against Jackson Labarge of North Adirondack-VII in the 118-pound consolation bracket, Braley dominated Carson Turner of Canisteo-Greenwood-V with a first-period pin at 1:48 and then Hardy squeaked by Fredy Lemus of Island Trees-VIII with a 1-0 decision at 285 pounds by scoring an escape in the second period.
After those wins, Torres finished in eighth place being first pinned by Chase Davis of Port Jefferson-XI in 4:55 and then he suffered a 7-1 decision at the hands of Joel Diaz of Seaford-VIII in the seventh-place match.
Braley worked his way into the fifth-place match after adding another win against Aiden Brito of Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy in a 12-9 decision, but then he lost to the former 2-seed Trent True of Holland/Patent-III by 12-2 major decision.
He then made it a pair of fifth-place finishes for the Golden Cougars in Albany, taking down Titus Callahan of Newark Valley-IV in 29 seconds with a pin.
Hardy also found himself in the seventh-place match after being defeated by former top-seed Joe Biccum-III in a 5-1 decision, going up against Antonio Landon of Granville/Whitehall-II.
The Salamanca sophomore finished seventh on the podium in his states debut courtesy of a 5-0 decision against Landon.
Randolph senior Kamren Anderson came up one win short of making the podium, dropping his blood match against Freddy Smith of Sherburne/Earlville-III in the 103-pound Division 2 consolation bracket.
Anderson scored the first takedown of the match against Smith, but a late reversal spelled out the end for him.
Once the first period ended, Smith controlled the match earning two near falls in the second frame and building his lead up to 12-3 heading into the third. Anderson gave it one final push, but being so far behind he likely needed a pin and was unable to get the best of Smith who held on for the 13-8 decision.

Four of the local wrestlers that made the trip to states saw their seasons end during Friday night’s action, but still turned in terrific seasons.
Southwestern senior Carmine Calimeri’s bid for five state placements came to an end in the wrestlebacks after being upset in the prequarterfinals at 138 pounds by losing a narrow 11-10 decision against No. 12 Jayden Acomb of Ravena/Coeymans/Selkirk-II.
The previously fifth-seeded Calimeri posted a consolation win over Benjamin Lawson of Jordan-Elbridge-III with a pin in 3:30, but he could not make it to Saturday for the first time in his varsity career as he was held off by a 10-9 decision against Garrett Mehlenbacher of Dansville/Wayland-Cohocton-V.
Jamestown junior Aaden Howard dropped both of his matches in his debut at states, falling in the first-round of the 132-pound Division 1 bracket by 11-1 major decision defeat at the hands of No. 12 Chase Allocca of Carmel-I. He was then bounced from the consolation bracket by Colin Matone of Minisink Valley-IX with a pin at 53 seconds.
Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s Alex Bourgeois suffered the same fate in his states debut after being initially eliminated in the first-round of the 144-pound Division 2 bracket by No. 20 Steven McCann of East Rochester-V with a 10-6 decision. He was then eliminated from the tournament by an 8-2 decision from Sacha Macadam of the Collegiate School.
Gowanda/Pine Valley’s Nathan Warrior managed a first-round victory at 144 pounds, defeating No. 21 Diego Villacis of North Shore-VIII with a pin at 2:26.
That was followed by a prequarterfinal loss to 5-seed Cyler Baer of Gouverneur-X in an 18-3 technical fall and then was eliminated by a 1:43 pin from Teegan Smith of Saranac-VII.
