Don’t look now, but Gavin Johnson is on a heater.
The Jamestown senior continued his outstanding play Tuesday as the Red & Green rolled to an 81-64 victory over Williamsville South in a nonleague boys basketball game at McElrath Gymnasium.
The 5-foot-11 guard scored a game-high 24 points (on 8 of 12 shooting); made all four of his free throws; grabbed three rebounds; dished out two assists; blocked a shot; and collected a steal. Nineteen of those points came in the first half when Jamestown built a 50-20 lead in clinic-like fashion.
“Early on, he had some decent games,” Red & Green head coach Billy Miley said of Johnson, “but he’s really been knocking them down at a consistent rate the last few.”
In his last five outings, in fact, Johnson has scored 16, 26, 18, 10 and 24 points, giving Miley a robust three-prong attack that also includes senior guard Dominic Gonzalez and senior forward Elijah Farmer. Together, the trio can create all kinds of havoc at both ends of the court.

That was certainly the case yesterday.
In addition to Johnson’s highlight-reel performance — he was also 4 of 7 from beyond the arc — Gonzalez scored 16 points, and had seven steals and five assists; and Farmer finished with 15 points, including a slam dunk, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
As a team, the Red & Green connected on 32 of 59 attempts from the floor, including 12 of 32 from the arc, and forced 20 turnovers.
The first quarter was especially impressive as the hosts ran off the first eight points and finished the period on a 13-1 blitz to build a 29-10 lead. By halftime, the lead had grown to 30 points, virtually assuring Jamestown’s 14th victory in 18 games.
“There were a lot of times today where we passed up good shoots for great shots for a teammate,” Miley said. “When everybody is willing to do that, it’s just amazing how the shots tend to fall at a high rate.”
The Red & Green return to action at 1:30 this afternoon when they take on Sweet Home at McElrath Gymnasium. Jamestown, which closes out its regular season at Olean on Thursday, will open its Section VI Class AAA postseason as the No. 2 seed at 8:30 p.m. Feb. 26 in the semifinals against No. 3 Niagara Falls at Buffalo State.
NOTES: Kellen Mims came off the bench to drill three 3-pointers on his way to 11 points for the Red & Green, which finished with four players in double figures. … Leading the way for Williamsville South (10-10), which has been without a couple starters due to injury, was Matthew Meetze with 16 points, Evan Pauly with 12 and Isaiah James with 11. … The Billies outscored the Red & Green 27-12 in the fourth quarter.
