The defending Class C state champion Frewsburg girls basketball team has lived up to the top billing by the New York State Sportswriters Association all season long and even after a loss to Pennsylvania’s Cathedral Prep, the Bears still maintain the No. 1 spot.

Frewsburg has since bounced back with four straight victories, defeating Class AA honorable mention Cardinal O’Hara 59-33, Gowanda 75-34, Class AA No. 7 Orchard Park 62-55 and Class C honorable mention Randolph 47-30 on Thursday night.

The Bears (13-2) don’t plan on slowing down either with a rematch against Cathedral Prep on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and a showdown with Class AA No. 2 North Tonawanda next Wednesday.

Frewsburg has not only set the standard locally, but in the section.

However, just outside the Class C rankings are honorable mentions Randolph (9-5), Chautauqua Lake (10-5) and Westfield (11-5). Wilson (14-3) is No. 20 in the last spot.

Panama has the kept the wins coming, last losing on Jan. 6 to Westfield, rattling off eight straight victories. The increased streak moved the Panthers (12-4) up a spot in Class D to No. 10, Sherman has picked up five wins in a row to earn a share of No. 20 with Section VII’s Chazy (9-5).

The Wildcats and Panthers will meet again Monday for the final time in the regular season, 6 p.m. in Sherman.

Forestville (8-4) is an honorable mention in Class D, but dropped a league game to Franklinville 46-44 on Thursday. Section X’s Chateaugay (16-0) remains undefeated and in the top spot.

Southwestern’s great form has led to six straight wins and No. 17 in Class B, jumping six spots from a week ago. The Trojans (12-4) will face a big test Saturday against Class AAA honorable mention Lancaster (11-5) at 1:30 p.m.

Earning honorable mentions are Allegany-Limestone (11-5), Salamanca (12-4) and Springville (11-3), while Section III’s Marcellus (15-2) is the top team in the state.

Lancaster is honorable mention in Class AAA, but West Seneca (14-3) is No. 16, St. Mary’s of Lancaster (11-6) is No. 11 and Catholic High School Monsignor Scanlan (16-5) is No. 1 in the state.

Just ahead of North Tonawanda in Class AA is undefeated Pittsford Sutherland of Section V, while Amherst (14-4) is honorable mention with Williamsville East (13-2).

In Class A, Depew (15-3) is ranked No. 11, Iroquois (12-4), Lake Shore (10-4) and Lewiston-Porter (13-3) are honorable mentions. Then undefeated Utica Notre Dame (16-0) of Section III takes the final top spot in the state.

BOYS

A weekend loss against Olean was enough to drop the Dunkirk boys basketball team out of the New York State Sportswriters Association Class A rankings and into an honorable mention position. However, that position should not last long as the Marauders (14-2) have responded to last Friday’s defeat with a 57-53 over Southwestern and then defeated rival Fredonia 70-62 — which is ranked No. 20 — and will have another opportunity to add a victory over Falconer tonight at 7:30.

Fredonia (15-2) improved its position two spots from last week, reaching seven straight wins between its only two losses to Dunkirk. The Hillbillies can get back in the win column tonight when they host Salamanca.

Among the Section VI schools, Grand Island (14-2) is ahead of the Hillbillies one spot at No. 19 and Lewiston-Porter (13-4) is No. 28, while Iroquois (13-1), Olean (11-5) and South Park (10-4) are honorable mentions with Dunkirk. Undefeated Westhill (16-0) of Section III remains the top ranked team in Class A.

The highest-ranked local boys basketball team is the Sherman Wildcats at No. 6 in Class D, continuing a 13-game win streak since dropping the second game of the season. Sherman (14-1) will look to keep the streak going against honorable mention Forestville (10-4) at Jamestown Community College on Saturday at 5:45 p.m.

Clymer swapped top-10 spots with Sherman after falling to the Wildcats last week 44-43 and since then have defeated honorable mention Panama 43-37 and lost to Southwestern on Wednesday 58-56. Now ranked No. 13, Clymer (11-6) will have a chance to get back in the win column when Class C honorable mention Westfield (10-8) visits tonight at 7:30.

The top Class D spot belongs to Section XI’s Bridgehampton (15-2).

Tonight’s contest is just as important for the Wolverines looking to get back on track after losses to No. 19 Global Concepts 59-43 and Sherman on Wednesday 61-53. Ellicottville (10-5) is also an honorable mention in Class C, but has won against Franklinville 41-37 and North Collins 61-48 since the rankings vote.

Wilson (17-1) is the top Section VI team at No. 5, while undefeated Section III’s Cooperstown (16-0) is No. 1 and Section V’s Fillmore (14-0) is No. 2.

Class AAA honorable mention Jamestown (11-4) also dropped a close game before the last vote, falling to Class AA No. 24 Nichols 65-61. However, the Red & Green have since posted impressive wins over Frontier 60-21 and Class AA honorable mention Orchard Park 62-47.

Niagara Falls (4-9) is also an honorable mention in Class AAA, while Health Sciences (11-1) is ranked No. 9. The top ranked team in the state is Catholic High School Archbishop Stepinac (15-4).

Southwestern is the only local honorable mention in Class B, but Section VI has undefeated Tapestry (14-0) at No. 4, Akron (13-3) at No. 11 and Medina (13-3) at No. 19. The top team in the state is Section I’s Woodlands (14-2).

The area’s private schools crack the Class AA rankings with St. Joe’s (15-4) at No. 19 and Canisius (12-6) at No. 22, while honorable mentions are Orchard Park (13-2), Sweet Home (11-3) and Williamsville North (10-5).
