Fredonia Coasts By City Honors 74-21 In Class A2 Quarterfinals

FREDONIA — A 22-7 first quarter was a pretty good start for the Fredonia boys basketball team Wednesday night.

A 19-0 second quarter was even better.

The fourth-seeded Hillbillies led 41-7 at halftime en route to a 74-21 win over No. 5 City Honors in a Section VI Class A2 quarterfinal at Fredonia High School.

“The playoffs are all about getting on a roll,” Fredonia head coach Nick Bertrando said. “We got on a roll defensively, that led to some offense and we started generating stuff.”

Safe to say, the Hillbillies’ next test will be much more difficult. They’ll travel to Buffalo State University on Saturday for a 4 p.m. semifinal against No. 1 Iroquois, which beat No. 9 Depew 53-42 in another quarterfinal Wednesday. The Red Hawks feature senior Justus Kleitz, the leading scorer in Western New York at more than 34 points per game.

“Between the Kleitz kid and Dom Pasek — he can absolutely shoot the ball too,” Bertrando said. “We are definitely going to have our work cut out for us. Luckily we have two days to iron some things out to get ready for the Red Hawks.”

RJ Koopman led the Hillbillies on Wednesday with 20 points to go along with five assists, four steals and three rebounds. Colin Luce had 18 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals while Donovan Dowdy had 15 points, five rebounds, three steals, two blocked shots and two assists. Fredonia shot 30 of 56 from the field.

“A pretty complete game from us,” Bertrando said. “We got everybody in and they all got good minutes.”

Julius Petti led City Honors with 10 points.

“He was a guy that we knew was averaging 17 points per game coming into it. A lot of the offense ran through him,” Bertrando said. “We knew what they wanted to run and ultimately tried to slow that down.”

Fredonia’s 4 p.m. boys game Saturday will follow the Fredonia girls’ 2 p.m. game at Buffalo State University.

“The girls are playing at 2 and we are at 4 so hopefully we’ll get a good Fredonia contingent,” Bertrando said, “not only for the girls game, but for us as we play back to back.”
