The Clymer Pirates are sending head coach Irv King out as a champion.

Carson White had 25 points, five steals, four rebounds and two blocked shots as Clymer beat Maple Grove 67-51 on Friday evening at Maple Grove Jr.-Sr. High School to wrap up a share of the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 boys basketball title in King’s final season on the bench.

“It means a lot,” King said about the title, which the Pirates are sharing with Sherman. “This group, they’ve put in a lot of time. A week after the season ended last March, they wanted to get back in the gym. They’ve worked hard since last March getting ready for this.”

The Pirates (14-6, 11-1) led 22-10 late in the first quarter before Aiden Dahlberg hit a jumper and Liam Price nailed a 3-pointer to pull the Red Dragons (6-14, 3-9) within seven entering the second quarter.

“After that first timeout, we kind of started to settle into the game,” Maple Grove head coach Graham Soffel said. “I liked the ball movement and we hit some good shots.”

Dahlberg then hit a 3-pointer to make it a four-point game early in the second quarter, but Blake Beckerink answered with one of his four 3-pointers as Clymer regained its seven-point advantage.

“They’ve got guards who can attack, guys who can shoot,” Soffel said. ” … We tried a few different defenses and we were still struggling.”

Maple Grove closed to within two late in the first half before Kameron Einink hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Pirates a 36-28 lead at the break.

“Kam hasn’t been looking to shoot the 3 as much, but when they backed off him he buried a couple of big ones tonight,” King said. ” … Those were big shots.”

The teams exchanged buckets early in the third quarter before Clymer went on a 13-3 run to close out the period and lead 58-43 entering the final quarter. White and Beckerink each hit a 3-pointer during the span — the Pirates finished the game with 13 triples.

“Until we got two or three stops in a row, that was the first time we really started to pull away,” King said.

Price opened the fourth quarter with a bucket to pull the Red Dragons within 13, but a 9-0 run capped by a Roman Wassink 3-pointer gave Clymer its biggest lead of the night at 22 before the Pirates closed out the game.

“Offensively, we played great and we shot it well,” King said. “In the first half, defensively I thought we were pretty good, they just knocked down a lot of tough shots.”

NOTES: Beckerink had 17 points and three assists; Wassink had 13 points, 10 rebounds and two steals; and Einink had 11 assists and 10 rebounds for Clymer, which shot 26 of 65 from the field, including 13 of 31 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over eight times. … Liam Colburn and Dahlberg had 17 points apiece for Maple Grove, which shot 19 of 46 from the field, including 9 of 23 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 17 times.
