The Frewsburg girls basketball team continued its difficult nonleague schedule and the No. 1 Class C team in the state has only shown improvement.

Since losing to Cathedral Prep of Erie, Pa., 55-25, the Bears bounced back with victories over Cardinal O’Hara 59-33, Gowanda 75-34, Orchard Park 62-55, Randolph 47-30 and then this past Saturday took that same Cathedral Prep team to overtime for a 54-53 loss.

The Bears lost again Wednesday, but it took the top-ranked Class AA team North Tonawanda until the fourth quarter to pull away for a 68-61 victory.

As Frewsburg continues to be the standard in Class C, honorable mentions Chautauqua Lake (10-8) and Westfield (13-5) faced off Tuesday with the Wolverines getting the best of the Eagles 38-30. Randolph (11-5) and Wilson (15-4) also earned honorable mentions for Section VI.

With no games between votes, Panama remained the No. 10 team in Class D, but a narrow 55-53 over No. 19 Sherman on Monday and another 53-35 win over Chautauqua Lake on Wednesday could have the Panthers on the rise.

Sherman (8-8) will look to bounce back tonight at Chautauqua Lake and then close out its league schedule against Clymer on Saturday.

Undefeated Chateaugay of Section X remains atop Class D, while Forestville (10-4) and Franklinville (10-8) are honorable mentions.

Southwestern had wins against Olean 69-41 and Fredonia 61-31 sandwich a tough loss to Class AAA honorable mention Lancaster 43-33. That stretch kept Southwestern (13-5) at No. 17 in Class B, the lone Section VI school that is ranked, as Allegany-Limestone (12-5), Salamanca (13-4) and Springville (13-3) are honorable mentions.

The Trojans will attempt to close out another perfect league season tonight against Salamanca.

North Tonawanda became Section VI’s second top-ranked team, joining the Bears as it ascended to the top of Class AA with a 14-2 record. Orchard Park (16-3) comes in at No. 11, while honorable mentions are Amherst (14-5), Cardinal O’Hara (6-14) and Williamsville East (16-2).

In Class A, Depew (16-3) is just outside the top 10 at No. 11, while honorable mentions include Lewiston-Porter (15-3), Iroquois (13-4), Kenmore East (11-8) and Lake Shore (11-5). Undefeated Utica Notre Dame (18-0) of Section III is the state’s top-ranked squad.

St. Mary’s of Lancaster (13-6) comes in at No. 10 in Class AAA, while Niagara Falls (13-3) and Lancaster (12-6) are honorable mentions and Monsignor Scanlan (16-5) is the top team in the state out of the Catholic High School Athletic Association.

BOYS

The Dunkirk boys basketball team’s absence from the New York State Sportswriters Association Class A rankings was short-lived. After dropping its second game of the season prior to last week’s rankings, Dunkirk was named an honorable mention, but four straight wins including a 70-62 decision over Fredonia has the Marauders (16-2) at No. 29 in the state.

Both of Fredonia’s losses have come at the hands of the Marauders and the last defeat dropped the Hillbillies out of the rankings into the honorable mentions of Class A. Fredonia (17-2) has since bounced back with wins over Salamanca 46-37 and Southwestern 74-59, and will wrap up the regular season Friday at Falconer.

Above the Marauders in the rankings are three other Section VI teams with Grand Island (16-2) at No. 12, Iroquois (15-1) at No. 21 and Lewiston-Porter (13-5) at No. 27. Section III’s Westhill (18-0) remains undefeated and the top team in the state.

After 13 straight victories, Sherman’s streak came to an end at the hands of Forestville 70-53 at Jamestown Community College on Saturday. With the win, the Hornets became the highest-ranked Class D team in the section, jumping Sherman by a spot at No. 10.

Since that big win at JCC, the Hornets have only solidified their position with an 80-56 decision over Gowanda on Monday and a 71-27 thrashing of Pine Valley on Tuesday.

No. 11 Sherman (15-2) bounced back with a 86-37 win over Panama on Tuesday and will be back in action tonight at Chautauqua Lake. Clymer (13-6) fell back another spot to No. 14 after a narrow loss to Southwestern last week, but responded with victories against Westfield 59-50 and Brocton 41-20.

Section XI’s Bridgehampton (18-2) added three more wins this past week and remains No. 1 in the state.

Jamestown (11-4) remains an honorable mention in Class AAA, posting wins over Frontier 60-21 and Orchard Park 62-47 since last week’s rankings. The Red & Green are back in action against Clarence tonight after a week off.

Health Sciences (15-1) maintained position at No. 9, while Niagara Falls (5-10) is also an honorable mention. Archbishop Stepinac (19-4) of the Catholic High Schools remains No. 1 in the state.

Section VI nears the top of the Class C rankings as Wilson (18-1) maintains just one loss for the No. 2 spot in the state, just behind undefeated Cooperstown (18-0) of Section III. Global Concepts cracks the rankings at No. 17, while both Ellicottville (11-7) and Westfield (11-9) remain honorable mentions.

Despite being undefeated, Tapestry (18-0) ranks No. 3 in Class B, while Section I’s Woodlands (16-2) stays at the top spot. Akron ranks No. 8, while Medina (13-5), Middle Early College (10-9), MST Prep (12-6) and Olmsted (11-6) are honorable mentions.

The area’s private schools remain the only representation in Class AA with Canisius (15-6) at No. 18, St. Joe’s (16-5) at No. 20, Nichols (16-4) at No. 24 and St. Mary’s of Lancaster (14-6) at No. 29.

Orchard Park (16-3) and Williamsville North (11-7) are honorable mentions, while Section V’s Penfield (14-1) stays at No. 1.
