ALBANY — When Miles Torres made the trip to states for the first time as a sophomore last season he cramped in his opening match and ultimately was relegated to the consolation bracket.
He fought his way to fourth place after running the gauntlet in the consolation bracket.
Another slow start brought the fear of disappointment again, but Torres was not to be deterred this time.
Fighting back from giving up the first takedown, Torres controlled his 118-pound prequarterfinal match against No. 10 Jonah Stevens of Salem/Cambridge-II for a 8-4 decision to advance to quarterfinals of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Division 2 wrestling championships at MVP Arena in Albany on Friday afternoon.
The Miles victory followed that of his older brother, senior Adrian who is on a quest to get back to the state final from a year ago.

The 3-seeded Adrian dominated his match against Coda Clifford of Canton-X, cruising to an emphatic 19-5 major decision and earning a spot in the quarterfinals against No. 6 Thomas Matias of Shoreham Wading River-XI.
The 6-seeded Miles joins his brother in the quarterfinals this year, but the road does not get easier as he takes on the 2-seeded Mason Tanner of Jordan/Elbridge/PB/US/CM-III.
Senior Tavio Hoose made his return to the state tournament with the Trojans a flashy affair as he dominated No. 13 Jackson Peet of Caledonia-Mumford-V for a 19-4 technical fall in the prequarterfinals of the 190-pound Division 2 bracket.
His quarterfinal opponent will be a rematch of the Section VI final as he takes on Falconer/Cassadaga Valley junior Patrick Braley. Coming back for his second state tournament, the 5-seeded Braley survived a scare against No. 21 Benjamin Rivera of Port Jervis-IX. In the last seconds of the first period, Rivera nearly stole a pin from Braley and thanks to a reversal and near fall had a 6-3 lead after one.
However, Braley got right back to work in the second period with a quick takedown which he converted into a pin at 2:49.

While Braley earned a bye into the prequarterfinals, junior teammate Dylan Newman fought to get to that spot and after two very quick pins is showing that he is better than the 11-seed suggests.
Newman first pinned No. 21 Karian Aspinall of Bronx Studio School in just 26 seconds and then his prequarterfinal match was just as dominant as he made quick work of 6-seed Colin Logalbo of Little Falls-III in 1:18 for the pin.
Salamanca sophomore Kasen Hardy was the last local wrestler to clinch a quarterfinal spot, knocking off No. 13 Lincoln Cha of Cold Spring Harbor-VIII with second-round pin at 3:32. The 4-seeded Hardy will take on No. 12 Trey Parker of Susquehanna Valley-IV as he makes a bid for the semifinals at 285 pounds.
Southwestern senior Carmine Calimeri’s bid for a fifth consecutive spot on the podium was made a lot harder today when he dropped a back and forth contest against No. 12 Jayden Acomb of Ravena/Coeymans/Selkirk-II. Calimeri had control at times, but was unable to capitalize on his opportunities to pin and in the end of the match when he needed a final reversal all he could muster was an escape as Acomb advanced to the 138-pound quarterfinals with an 11-10 decision.
Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s Thandon Bensink also suffered heartbreak in the prequarterfinals of the 132-pound bracket, but unlike Calimeri he was never able to gain control of the contest. The 7-seeded Bensink was knocked off by No. 10 Jason Canedo of Deposit/Hancock-IV in his prequarterfinal as Canedo scored early and never looked back en route to a 9-2 decision.

Gowanda/Pine Valley’s Nathan Warrior and Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s Colton Hamilton were both relegated to the consolation bracket after first-round victories.
Warrior was ousted by 144-pound 5-seed Cyler Baer of Gouverneur-X in an 18-3 technical fall after he initially defeated No. 21 Diego Villacis of North Shore-VIII with a pin at 2:26.
The 215-pound 15-seeded Hamilton first knocked off No. 18 Hudson Garbarino of Pawling-I with a third-period pin at 5:06, but then he was pitted against No. 2 Gianni Velazquez of Geneva-V who lived up to the billing. Velazquez controlled the match en route to a 20-6 major decision and relegated Hamilton to the consolation bracket.
Randolph’s Kamren Anderson’s began his state tournament with a win and then a loss to the consolation bracket. After defeating Alyn Capen of Peru-VII, the 14-seeded Anderson was tasked with wrestling against 103-pound 3-seed Connor Duryea of Avon/Geneseo-V.
Anderson fell behind early against Duryea and trailed 11-3 heading into the final period. He managed the only takedown of the last period, but Duryea slipped away from any serious danger for a 13-6 decision.

While both the Torres brothers, Newman, Braley, Hoose and Hardy advanced to the quarterfinals, the remaining local wrestlers still have a shot at the podium through wrestlebacks.
Battling through the wrestlebacks are Randolph’s Anderson at 103 pounds, Chautauqua Lake’s Bensink at 132 pounds, Southwestern’s Calimeri at 138 pounds, Gownada/Pine Valley’s Warrior and Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s Alex Bourgeois both at 144 pounds, Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s Colton Hamilton at 215 pounds and Jamestown’s Aaden Howard at Division 1’s 132 pounds.
