FREDONIA — Randolph hit six 3-pointers in the first quarter to take a 24-7 lead and then held on late to beat Chautauqua Lake in the final game of the Martin Luther King Jr. High School Basketball Showcase on Sunday inside Fredonia State University’s Dods Hall.
The Cardinals (7-1) started the game on fire, hitting 6 of 11 shots from deep in the first quarter, including three from senior Broden Brooks and two more from fellow senior Kevin McElwain.
But Randolph only outscored the Eagles (4-6) 10-0 in the second quarter to lead 34-16 at halftime.
Chautauqua Lake made up ground in the third quarter, thanks in part to a 13-5 run, and trailed 47-31 heading into the final eight minutes.
During the huddle in between quarters, Eagles head coach Devin Pope asked his team to cut the deficit to 10. They did even better, opening the fourth on a 10-0 run that included a pair of 3-pointers from senior Nick Jacobson to make it 47-41 with 4:13 remaining.

After a McElwain free throw, senior Asher Olson scored through contact to make it 48-43, and after McElwain scored at the other end, Jacobson hit his fourth 3-pointer of the game to make it 50-46 with 2:11 remaining.
But the Eagles turned the ball over on their next three possessions as the Cardinals tacked on a pair of free throws. Olson and McElwain traded free throws inside the final minute and Jacobson hit another 3-pointer, but after Brooks’ two free throws made it a five-point game, Chautauqua Lake turned it over one final time.
Brooks led Randolph with 20 points while McElwain added 19.
Jacobson paced the Eagles with 15 points, Olson had 12 and senior Trent Houser chipped in 11.
