Parmentier Caps Off Falconer Comeback In MLK Jr. Day Showcase At JCC

Marcus Parmentier hit a pair of free throws with 6 seconds remaining as Falconer rallied past Panama for a 41-39 win in the final game of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Showcase inside Jamestown Community College’s Physical Education Complex on Monday.

The Golden Falcons trailed for nearly the entire game. Their latest lead was 3-2 and the game was tied at 5-all before the Panthers took the lead.

Falconer’s Chase Bianco tied the game at 39-all with 2:06 remaining as part of an 8-0 run. Neither team scored on the next seven possessions, but Parmentier rebounded a miss in the closing seconds and was fouled. That infraction was Panama’s fifth foul of the fourth quarter, sending Parmentier to the line for the eventual winning shots.

The Panthers inbounded, but Michael Horton’s desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark.

Max Parmentier led the Golden Falcons (9-5) with 18 points, six steals, five rebounds and four blocked shots. Donovan Delaney had five assists and Marcus Parmentier grabbed five rebounds.

Horton led Panama (4-6) with 14 points and Johnny Abers had 10.

The Panthers led 14-10 after the first quarter and 21-16 at halftime. The advantage grew to as much as nine midway through the third quarter before Falconer closed the period on a 7-2 run to make it 33-29 entering the final eight minutes.

CLYMER PULLS AWAY IN THIRD

JAMESTOWN — Five different players scored during a 19-7 third quarter as Clymer pulled away from Ellicottville en route to a 56-43 win in the second game of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Showcase inside Jamestown Community College’s Physical Education Complex.

The Pirates (8-4) led 25-24 at halftime before scoring the opening six points of the third quarter on a pair of buckets from Carson White and two free throws by Eli Mitchell.

After AJ Myers made a 2-pointer and Blake Smith added a 3-pointer for the Eagles (6-4), Clymer closed the quarter on an 11-2 run capped by Roman Wassink’s lone 3-pointer of the game.

White led the Pirates with 13 points to go along with five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Blake Beckerink had 12 points and four steals; Mitchell had 10 points and three rebounds; and Wassink chipped in 9 points and a team-high 13 rebounds to go along with three assists.

Smith led Ellicottville with 12 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals; Myers had 10 points and four assists; and Dominic Polino also grabbed five rebounds.

EFFICIENT FREDONIA BEATS FREWSBURG

JAMESTOWN — Fredonia put on a display of efficient basketball, shooting 61% from the field and turning the ball over just eight times in a 76-41 win over Frewsburg in the opening game of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Showcase inside Jamestown Community College’s Physical Education Complex.

The Bears (4-8) hung around in the opening eight minutes, trailing by just four after the first quarter, but the Hillbillies (12-1) outscored them 56-25 the remainder of the way.

Colin Luce led Fredonia with 23 points and four blocked shots to go along with four rebounds and two assists. The senior shot 11 of 12 from the field, missing just a 3-point attempt. Donovan Dowdy added 20 points and a team-high 12 rebounds, six assists and three steals to go along with three blocked shots. RJ Koopman chipped in 11 assists and six rebounds..

Jaden Collver led Frewsburg with 10 points, four blocked shots and three assists while Drake Beckstrom chipped in 9 points. Gavin Weaver also had three assists and Braeden Signorino had two steals.

NOTES: Fredonia shot 33 of 54 from the field, including 3 of 11 from 3-point range. Two of the Hillbillies’ turnovers came in the fourth quarter with mostly reserves in the lineup. … Frewsburg shot 17 of 44 from the field, including 3 of 9 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 16 times.
