FREWSBURG — In the first half, Frewsburg showed why it’s the No. 1 Class team in the state.
In the second half, Randolph created some hope that things might be different when the teams meet again.
The Bears went 16 of 32 from the field during a 38-17 first half on their way to a 54-32 victory over the Cardinals in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 3 girls basketball Tuesday night at Frewsburg Middle/High School.
“I think we came out looking really good in the first half,” Frewsburg head coach Sierra Beaver said, “making good passes, finding people inside, moving the ball well outside and shooting a good percentage.”
Senior Abery Harvey led Frewsburg (7-1, 2-0) with 23 points — 15 coming in the first half — to go along with six rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots, while junior Jadyn Trocki added 20 points, three steals, three assists and three blocked shots.

“They have a really good one-two punch with (Elysse) Gruber and Harvey inside,” Randolph head coach David Pihlblad said. “If you give them a little window, they are going to get that layup every single time.”
The Bears led 20-10 after a first quarter during which they went 9 of 15 from the field and turned the ball over just three times. The margin grew to 21 by halftime, keyed by back-to-back three-point plays from Trocki — the second putting her team up by 22 with 2:42 left in the second quarter.
“I know that she can get a shot off at pretty much anytime. … I don’t get nervous when I see people send two defenders at her,” Beaver said of Trocki, the 2025 Class C state Player of the Year. ” … I still see growth every single day.”
Frewsburg’s biggest lead came on a pair of Harvey free throws early in the third quarter, but the Bears only held a 6-5 advantage in the period as the teams combined to go 3 of 25 from the field.
“I think in the third quarter we still got a lot of the shots that we wanted, we just didn’t shoot a high percentage,” Beaver said. “In the fourth quarter, we were trying some different things … but we definitely got stagnant in the third and fourth quarters as far as scoring. … We weren’t able to do that as efficiently as we did in the first half.”

The fairly even second half concluded with a 10-10 fourth quarter, giving Pihlblad hope that his Cardinals (5-2, 2-1) could hang around with Frewsburg on another night. Randolph put up just 36 shot attempts in the game and freshman Ava Sears made her team’s only 3-pointer.
“They are really good defensively. They put a lot of pressure on the ball. You get those swing passes opposite and you get those open 3s,” Pihlblad said. ” … If we hit a couple of shots, maybe it’s a different game next time.”
While both teams have several games to go before meeting again, the rematch Feb. 5 in Randolph could very well decide the league title.
“Offensively, we struggled tonight. We have some young girls out there where that first half, I think, was eye-opening going against some really good players from Frewsburg,” Pihlblad said. “In the second half, I was really happy with the effort. I felt like we battled to the very end.”
NOTES: Gruber, a sophomore, had 7 points, six rebounds and three assists while another sophomore, Jaden Jimerson, had nine rebounds, five assists and three steals for Frewsburg, which shot 21 of 58 from the field, including 5 of 19 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 10 times. … Sears had 14 points and six rebounds while senior Gianna Bowles had 7 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals for Randolph, which shot 12 of 36 from the field, including 1 of 14 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 22 times.
