ELLERY — Forestville’s pressure gave Maple Grove fits for the first quarter Wednesday evening.

And the second.

And the third.

And the fourth.

When all was said and done, the Hornets forced the Red Dragons into 30 turnovers, which led to 34 points in a 77-57 nonleague basketball win for Forestville.

“We’re trying to put the pressure on other teams, turn the ball over, get down the court and get some easy buckets,” Forestville head coach Ralph Jackson said. “Our best offense is our defense.”

As the top man on the Hornets’ press, junior William Duliba led his team with 26 points –17 of them coming off of Maple Grove turnovers.

“We certainly want to try and speed things up when we can,” Jackson added. “When it’s time, we’ll slow it down if we need to, but we’re at our best when we are out running and getting out on the break.”

Junior Dominic Anders had 17 points, junior Jacob Anders had 11 points and sophomore Patrick Reilly chipped in 11 for the Hornets, who improved to 8-2 overall with the victory.

“Tonight Dom had 17 points. He’s certainly capable of that, but with some of the other guys we’ve got he doesn’t always get as many shots,” Jackson said. “Dom was great tonight, Will was great and having Jake back, getting him going is good.”

Junior Jack Reynolds led the Red Dragons (3-10) with 16 points, including four 3-pointers, and sophomore Aiden Dahlberg added 16 while another sophomore, Liam Price, had 10 points.

“I think we have a handful of guys that can shoot and a couple of guys that I wish would shoot more,” Maple Grove head coach Graham Soffel said. “I like our guys to play inside out because we have that paint presence, but we have good shooters, too.”

The Hornets jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the opening five minutes, capped by a three-point play and another bucket from Duliba. The lead was 19-9 after the first quarter.

“I thought we didn’t make a lot of good decisions with the ball,” Soffel said, “but you have to give credit to them, they run a great press.”

Maple Grove cut its deficit to six midway through the second quarter on a 3-pointer from Price, and Kyle Yohe and Reynolds later hit 3s for the Red Dragons, but Forestville closed the quarter on a 12-2 run to lead 40-24 at halftime.

“We certainly want to go on those runs,” Jackson said.

The Hornets then opened the third quarter on a quick 8-0 run to essentially put the game away.

“They don’t quit. They keep playing. Even when we got up I knew they’d keep playing,” Jackson said of the Red Dragons, who made 11 3-pointers on the night. “They had 24 points in the fourth quarter. … They started knocking down some 3s left and right.”

Forestville will return to Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 4 action Friday at second-place Cattaraugus-Little Valley while Maple Grove will host Division 2 foe Panama that same night.

“It’s tough when you play a team like Forestville that is super physical. I felt like we didn’t match that intensity,” Soffel said. “That’s what I want our guys to work on is bringing up the physicality a little bit, especially rebounding.”

NOTES: Forestville finished 32 of 79 from the field, including 4 of 15 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 15 times. … Maple Grove was 23 of 52 from the field, including 11 of 26 from 3-point range, but was done in by its 30 turnovers.
