The Jamestown Community College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams continued their dominance against Region 3 competition with a sweep of their home invite on Saturday.
The Jayhawks jumped out to an early lead on both sides; the women executed a beautiful 400-yard medley relay, with the team of Desiree Putt, Addison Lawson, Willow Chase and Emily Swan winning by over five seconds. The men followed that up with a win of their own from the team of Christian Merrill, Zach Johnson, Sam Hersom, and Dan Peterson, winning by almost five seconds as well.
Sticking with the women, Lawson and Sophia Gervasio captured first and second in the 1,000 freestyle. Then it was all Jayhawks in the 50-yard backstroke as Putt and Chase earned first and second.
Lawson returned to the top of the podium in the 50-yard breaststroke, taking first by over two seconds, and the duo of Roxanne Lothian and Swan were on top of the 200-yard freestyle as well.
In the 50-yard freestyle, it was a second and third for the Jayhawks, as Putt was just edged out for the top spot and Gervasio brought home third. Putt didn’t waste much time getting back to the gold, winning the 100-yard individual medley.

The 100-yard freestyle saw Jamestown CC swim the top two times; Swan beat Lawson by just over five seconds for the win. The trend of the Jayhawks taking first and second continued in the 200-yard backstroke, where Lothian swam a blistering 2:25:87 to beat teammate Willow Chase by nearly 15 seconds.
It was a second and third for Swan and Gervasio in the 500-yard freestyle, respectively. The Jayhawks secured another second and third in the 50-yard butterfly, with Lothian just missing catching Mikayla Yohon from Genesee and Chase right behind in third.
Lastly, the women grabbed another relay win in the 400-yard freestyle behind Putt, Lawson, Chase and Swan.
For the men, Cameron Milewski stayed perfect in the one-meter diving competitions with his score of 202.73. Jamestown CC’s Sam Hersom tackled the grueling 1,000-yard freestyle, where he took first with a time of 13:04:00.
Merrill was back in the water for the 50-yard backstroke for another second-place race.

Johnson beat his seed time by almost two-10ths in the 50 breast to claim another Jayhawks’ victory.
In the 200-yard freestyle, Peterson clocked another top spot by over six seconds.
Milewski not only won diving, but was also in the water for the 50-yard freestyle, where he swam by the competition by over two seconds in a sprint.
Jamestown CC saw a first and third in the 100-yard individual medley, with Johnson being on top and Merrill in third.
Peterson and Milewski kept the momentum going in the 100-yard freestyle, where the duo once again finished first and second, over four seconds ahead of third.
Johnson and Hersom each grabbed another win in the 200-yard breaststroke and 500-yard freestyle, respectively. That combo took second and third in the 50-yard butterfly, with Peterson failing to win by less than a second.
Lastly, the men secured another relay win in the 400-yard freestyle from Hersom, Johnson, Milewski and Peterson.
The Jayhawks are right back in the competitive waters on Wednesday when they travel to Erie CC for a meet at 5 p.m.
FRIDAY
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Jamestown Community College women’s basketball team was sluggish to start Friday night in its home game against Lorain County CC before turning it on late to win 61-47.
The Jayhawks fell into a quick 9-3 hole before a little run gave them their first lead off of a Felicity Thiem layup to make it a 12-10 Jayhawk advantage.
The back-and-forth continued through the first quarter, with Lorain CC holding a 13-10 edge.
Jamestown CC continued to trail for most of the second quarter before Samantha Probst knocked down back-to-back threes to push the Jayhawks back in front, 26-23. The freshman scored 12 points on the night, but Lorain CC closed the half on an 8-0 run to lead 31-26 at the break.
The halftime speech by head coach Dave Turnbull must have been special, as the Jayhawks came out of the break a different team.
They stormed back to tie it up at 35-35 on a backdoor cut from Probst, then a rebound and bucket from Thiem once again put the Jayhawks on top 37-35.
Jamestown CC went on to win the third quarter 14-8 to take a one-point lead into the final frame.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Jayhawks. Over a 60-second span, Ashlynn Delcamp banked home a pair of layups for four of her 10 points, Mila Espinoza, who led Jamestown CC with 13, and Probst also scored, and just like that, Jamestown CC was up eight and it never looked back.
The victory moves the Jayhawks to 11-6.
SUNDAY
JCC DOWNS ORANGE
It’s not how you start, but how you finish, and the Jamestown CC women’s basketball team proved that saying correct in its 75-50 win over Orange CC on Sunday afternoon.
The Jayhawks started the game down 10-4 before ripping off an 11-2 run to close the quarter, thanks in large part to jumpers from Samantha Probst, who finished the afternoon with 10 points.
Jamestown CC opened up the second quarter much like it closed the first, as Jani Washington’s transition layup put the Jayhawks up double digits. The sophomore ended with a team-high 17 points.
The Jayhawks would dominate the second quarter 22-5 to go to the break with a 37-17 advantage.
Jamestown CC head coach Dave Turnbull went to his bench often in this one, and the reserves didn’t disappoint. A pair of long-range buckets from Madalyn King pushed the Jayhawks’ lead to 21 points late in the third period.
The Jayhawks would go on to win by 25 points thanks in large part to rebounding dominance, winning the boards 48-31, and unselfish play, racking up 18 assists.
The win moves the women to 12-6.
Jamestown CC has a few days off before it opens conference play at Monroe CC on Saturday, at 1 p.m.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
SUNDAY
It was a step up in competition for the Jayhawks men’s basketball team as it hosted No. 21 Orange County CC on Sunday afternoon. The Jayhawks fought hard to the final buzzer, but ultimately fell just short, 89-83.
The story of the game was the play of Orange’s Anthony Pacciarelli, who scored a game-high 41 points, with seven of those coming early to put JCC in a 9-6 hole.
Deep shooting kept Jamestown in the contest; a 3-pointer from Marcus Wynter brought the Jayhawks to within 18-15 with 13 minutes to play in the first half. The sophomore finished with 18 points.
Orange went on a 13-0 run after that before Jodan Wright’s corner triple stopped the bleeding for Jamestown. The freshman finished with a team-high 19 points.
The Jayhawks would get within six at the three-minute mark of the half on a short jumper from Federico Foddai, who finished with 15 points.
Jamestown CC would go to the break trailing 43-36.
The second half started a lot like the first, with Pacciarelli scoring the first five points for Orange, and Jamestown CC was again down double-digits.
The Jayhawaks’ deficit quickly grew to 16 before sophomore Keyvone Craig scored four straight for the Jayhawks to bring it to a 12-point game.
The Jayhawks were down 15 with five minutes to play, but they made things interesting late.
A 7-0 run, thanks to Craig and Foddai, forced Orange to call a timeout as the lead was cut to eight.
Foddai kept playing hero with a four-point play at the 23-second mark, making it a four-point game.
Orange would knock down their last free throws to claim the six-point win.
The loss moves JCC to 10-6 on the season.
Jamestown CC has a few days off before it opens conference play at Monroe CC on Saturday at 3 p.m.
