Billy Miley didn’t hesitate when grading his team’s overall performance.
“Effort? 100 percent, A-plus,” the Jamestown head basketball coach said.
The leader of the figurative honor roll was Dominic Gonzalez.
The senior guard created havoc on both ends of McElrath Gymnasium on Monday night as the Red & Green opened its Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 schedule with a resounding 81-44 victory over Frontier.
The win, Jamestown’s fourth straight, improves its record to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the league, while the Falcons dropped to 3-3 and 0-1.

“I thought we competed, played hard and really tried to do the things we talked about right from the get-go on both ends of the floor,” Miley said. “And, I thought our focus and intensity level was there for 32 minutes, which was nice to see.”
Outside of a four-minute stretch to close out the first quarter, the outcome was never in doubt.
Leading 19-13 heading into the second period, the Red & Green outscored Frontier 28-9 and went into halftime with a 47-22 advantage.
The run featured vintage Gonzalez as he scored 10 points, courtesy of a pair of free throws, a pull-up jumper, a 3-pointer and a steal that led to an and-one. The quarter was capped by three made free throws by senior forward Elijah Farmer, who was fouled attempting a trey with 0.4 seconds remaining
After intermission, Jamestown’s advantage grew to more than 40 points, allowing Miley to give his reserves plenty of playing time.
Gonzalez finished with 21 points, eight assists and four steals. He committed just one turnover.
“He’s been solid all year,” Miley said. “He had that look about him that he can do whatever he wants when he wants to. He was really focused, really competing and getting other guys shots. He was locked in at the defensive end — he wants to guard the other team’s best player every game.”
Also performing well on Miley’s crew were Farmer with 16 points and six rebounds; Gavin Johnson with 14 points, six boards and two blocks; Kameron Milne, who came off the bench to drill three 3-pointers; and brother Karson Milne, who added 7 points and seven boards.
“We really moved the ball well,” Miley said. “We took great shots, not just good shots.”
For the Falcons, Kyle Wieczynski had 14 points, Connor Cox added 12 and Glen Echerverria chipped in 10.
NOTES: Jamestown will be back in action Thursday when it travels to Williamsville North. … In the junior varsity game, the Red & Green (3-2) downed Frontier 84-52. Blake Swanson scored 17 points, Noah Gonzalez added 13 and Ernie Alvira chipped in 12.
