Nothing came easy for the local wrestlers in the STWOA Holiday Classic.
With 11 wrestlers qualifying for the semifinals at Jamestown Community College’s Phyiscal Education Complex on Saturday, only four advanced to the final and one emerged champion.
Trailing by one point with just over a minute remaining in the 190-pound championship, Falconer/Cassadaga Valley junior Patrick Braley secured an escape from Brockport senior Dylan Fitzgerald that tied the match 5-5 and set up sudden-victory overtime.
Braley did not waste any time in the period, securing his second takedown of the match at the 24-second mark of overtime to win the 190-pound title 8-5.
Randolph senior Kamren Anderson almost joined Braley atop the podium, but was unable to secure the late points against St. Francis sophomore Patrick Winseman in the 103-pound final. Anderson led 4-0 early into the second period, but a Winseman takedown led to a nearfall and a 6-4 lead. Both wrestlers added an escape before the final whistle, but Winseman emerged victorious 7-5 with the first of four wins for St. Francis, leading to the team title at 335.5 points.

Anderson’s semifinal win over St. Francis freshman Jaxson Tocco secured his spot in second-place, while Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer eighth-grader placed seventh.
Southwestern junior Miles Torres and Falconer/Cassadaga Valley junior Dylan Newman also fell victim to St. Francis’ success in a championship bout.
At 126 pounds, the top-seeded Torres suffered a 19-3 technical fall in the second-round by No. 3 Brayden Kellison. Torres reached the final after grinding past Harbor Creek (Pa.) senior Hunter Chew in the semifinals 5-2.
At 132 pounds, Newman was pinned by top-seed Cullen Edwards at 1:45 and took second on the podium. Newman reached the final after picking up a 14-6 major decision against Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer junior Thandon Bensink.
Bensink wrestled back with a 14-5 major decision over Portville senior Riley Horsley and then a forfeit for third place. Horsley then pinned Jamestown junior Aaden Howard in the fifth-place match.

Southwestern seniors Adrian Torres and Carmine Calimeri came out on the wrong side of their semifinal matches, but both wrestled back to good spots on the podium.
The 110-pound top-seed Torres dropped his semifinal to St. Francis junior John Winseman 6-2, but bounced back with an 18-2 technical fall over Fredonia/Forestville/Silver Creek senior Jomar Quiles before falling in the third-place match to Union City (Pa.) senior Van Ward 4-1 in sudden-victory overtime.
Quiles placed sixth on the podium, falling in the fifth-place bout against Brockport sophomore Justis Majors by pinfall at 1:43. The championship was won by Eden/North Collins junior Mason DellaPenta with a narrow 1-0 decision against Winseman.
Calimeri dropped his semifinal match to Landen Hassel of Sharpsville (Pa.), surrendering four points in the final period to lose 9-7. He managed to bounce back with a 23-7 technical fall over Portville junior Elisha Hall and then pinned St. Francis sophomore Joseph Colantino in 39 seconds.
Eden/North Collins senior Trevor DellaPenta dominated Hassel in the championship with a 22-6 technical fall victory. Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer sophomore Alex Bourgeois wrestled back to a win in the seventh-place match by disqualification against Brockway (Pa.) sophomore Skyler Logan.
Maple Grove sophomore Jaxon Kraft suffered the same fate as Adrian Torres, going from top-seed semifinalist to fourth place on the podium at 150 pounds. Kraft was pinned in his semifinal by eventual champion Brandon Furgeson of Port Allegany (Pa.) in 3:43. He then bounced back with a 5-3 decision over Letchworth freshman Nolan Kelly, but lost in a 14-0 major decision against Max McCarthy of St. Francis.
Falconer/Cassadaga Valley senior Riley Best suffered a technical fall loss to Williamson’s Steven Olson in the 175-pound semifinals, but bounced back with a second-period pin against Port Allegany (Pa.) junior Zachary Hungiville at 3:37. Best then lost to the bracket’s top-seed Jake Zeigler of Portville in a 15-7 major decision to take fourth on the podium.
Corry junior Lamech Albers won the championship with a pin over Olson at 5:55.
Warren (Pa.) junior Colby Zinger wrestled back to the podium, ending the tournament with a pin at 0:48 against Northern Bedford Co. sophomore Jordan Free.
Southwestern senior Brayden Potter struggled to get back in the win column at 285 pounds after his semifinal loss to Corry (Pa.) senior Owen Nickerson 1-0 on a third-period escape.
Potter eventually took sixth on the podium after falling to Port Allegany (Pa.) junior Lucas Risser 2-0 and then a 10-2 major decision against Waverly senior Troy Beeman.
Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer junior Colton Hamilton suffered the same fate as Potter. He dropped his 215-pound semifinal to eventual champion, Port Allegany (Pa.) senior Aiden Bliss by pinfall at 1:03.
Then Hamilton lost a 9-2 decision against Wavery junior Matthias Welles and ended the tournament with an 8-7 loss to Corry (Pa.) junior Landon Nickerson for sixth place.
With St. Francis running away with the tournament’s team title, Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer was the top local finish in 8th place with five wrestlers reaching the podium.
Aside from Bensink and Hamilton, the Eagles had three wrestlers fight back into seventh place at the tournament.
Along with Bourgeois at 144 pounds, Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer eighth-grader Chester Machemer wrestled back to the podium at 103 pounds, ending the day with a 12-2 major decision in the seventh-place match against Newfane freshman Jonah Morrello. Then junior Toby Watson ended the day with a pin over Brockway (Pa.) junior Collin Weir at 2:19 in the 165-pound bracket.
Also on the podium at 144 pounds was Eisenhower (Pa.) freshman Collin Havers who took sixth thanks to securing a 4-2 decision over Watson, before two losses to end the day in sixth. The bracket was won by St. Francis senior Rory White.
At 118 pounds, Warren (Pa.) freshman Tanner Stuart managed fifth place, while Fredonia/Forestville/Silver Creek’s Rocco Muscarella took eighth and Dansville/Wayland/Cohocton sophomore Wyatt Sartori won the bracket.
At 138 pounds, Warren (Pa.) senior Hayden Holden wrestled back to sixth place, while Letchworth sophomore Joe Scott won the title.
Warren (Pa.) claimed the last spot at 157 pounds with Carter Campbell wrestling back into eighth-place and Eden/North Collins senior Bryce DellaPenta won the title.
“We had quite a few surprises this tournament, and this is a very tough place to win,” Warren head coach Koltyn Eason stated. “Our group has been improving every day. I’m constantly noting areas we need to work on, both individually and as a team, and the kids have been extremely receptive. There is a tremendous amount of potential in this room, and they’re absorbing information at a high level. I couldn’t be more excited to see how the year unfolds.”
With Braley atop the 190-pound podium, he was not alone locally with Frewsburg senior Branden Francis wrestling back with three wins and an eventual loss in the fourth-place bout against Harbor Creek senior Gunther 10-3.
Then Eisenhower (Pa.) senior Bryce Wilkins ended the day with a 18-6 major decision over Letchworth junior Braiden Schroeder in the fifth-place match.
“Finishing in the middle of the pack is not where we want to be,” Eisenhower head coach Jared Lindell said about his team’s performance. “But we have a young team and we have some things to work on and areas where we can certainly improve. I thought Collin and Bryceton wrestled well all weekend and they both had a great second day. We were especially proud of how freshman Brenton Myers wrestled, he finished 2-2 at 144 pounds.”
