Jamestown Girls Pull Away From Corning-Painted Post
ELMIRA — The Jamestown girls basketball team pulled away from Corning-Painted Post in the second quarter of the opening round of the Josh Palmer Fund Holiday Classic and secured a 61-51 victory on Saturday.
The Red & Green (2-2) shot 10 of 26 from beyond the arc, their best percentage-game in years, beginning with two triples from Payton Gibbs to establish the early lead. Gibbs finished with a team-high 21 points, while Makena Price provided another 13, Anna Engquist secured seven rebounds and Carley Daniels had six boards and dealt eight assists.
Charlise Starns paced the Hawks with a game-high 27 points, but Jamestown did enough to get through to Tuesday’s championship against Mansfield (Pa.).
“Most of the team had the flu,” Jamestown head coach Ken Ricker stated. “I was really proud of our toughness. Starns is a ridiculous post player, dominant post player.”
