Ellicottville Downs Trojans To Win Southwestern Holiday Tournament

As Ellicottville’s Parker John stepped to the foul line late in the fourth quarter Saturday evening in the championship game of the Southwestern Holiday Tournament, teammates AJ Myers, Blake Smith, Rylan Benjamin and Dominic Polino stood together at the opposite charity stripe and slapped hands.

By that stage of the evening, they had reason to celebrate.

Smith, the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, scored 19 points; Benjamin had 16; Polino collected 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds; and Myers chipped in 9 points to send the Eagles to a 64-53 victory over Southwestern.

The win improved Ellicottville’s record to 2-1, while the Trojans dropped to 1-2.

“They played outstanding today,” Eagles head coach Dave McCann said. “They played great team basketball in the first half, in particular, when we shared the ball really well. We had a lot of assists, leading to open shots and we were making shots. They definitely showed what they’re capable of doing, and I still think we can get a little bit better.”

That should give opponents on Ellicottville’s schedule pause this winter.

“I thought (Smith) was fantastic today,” McCann added. “He can score at different levels and he showed that today. Dom had a great weekend, (too). I thought those two guys (were) outstanding.”

Landon Hooks paced Southwestern with 21 points, including 16 in the first half, but the hosts managed just 21 points after intermission and endured two prolonged scoring droughts that proved to be the difference.

Until late in the third quarter, however, the game was close — Ellicottville and Southwestern were tied 32-all at the break — but the Eagles outscored the hosts 12-0 during a four-minute span to take control 51-43 advantage in the first minute of the fourth quarter. The Trojans did trim the deficit to 53-50 with five minutes remaining, but that was as close as they would get.

“Either we were tired or fell asleep a little bit defensively in the last four minutes,” Trojans head coach Aaron Emley said. ” … They made their shots and played hard and you saw their intensity pick up those last few minutes.”
