BUFFALO — Sawyer Whitney rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown while Carson White threw for a pair of scores as Clymer/Sherman/Panama closed its season with a 20-14 win over WNY Maritime/Tapestry in the Class C Chuck Funke Memorial Bowl championship Wednesday.

“This was a great way to end the season. We finished 6-4 this season and we were in every game,” Clymer/Sherman/Panama head coach Dave Bodamer said. “Three losses were by a total of 11 points and we played the league champions better than anyone. … They have a real chance to win sectionals and more.”

Whitney opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown before WNY Maritime/Tapestry’s David Dalton ran for a pair of touchdowns to give the hosts a 14-7 lead. White then threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Hayden Sexton as the Wolfpack tied the game before halftime.

“We came out, scored, and then got a stop to get off to a good start,” Bodamer said. “We struggled stopping the run in the second quarter and gave up some points, but put together a drive with under two minutes left, capped off by a great catch by Hayden Sexton in the back of the end zone with 7 seconds remaining.”

The only score after the break was Kameron Einink’s 9-yard touchdown reception from White in the third quarter.

“Maritime/Tapestry is very athletic and you cannot let them get loose because you are not going to catch them,” Bodamer said. “In the second half, we did a better job of that and it made a difference. Offensively, we finished the game in victory formation after taking the final seven-plus minutes off the clock. That is a testament to the guys locking in and finishing.”

White finished 19 of 27 for 161 yards with Einink catching nine passes for 109 yards. Whitney’s 112 yards gave him 1,035 for the season.

“Sawyer Whitney is our second 1,000-yard rusher in program history and the first since 2018,” Bodamer said. “That is a testament to our offensive line as well. These guys had to get used to a new system this year and just about an entire new coaching staff, and when they reflect on everything, they should be very proud of what they did this year.”
