Soaking It All In

Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton Flips The Script, Shuts Out Trojans 21-0 In Class C Championship

ORCHARD PARK — Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton faced a second-and-13 from the Southwestern/Frewsburg 26-yard line on the third play of the second quarter during Thursday evening’s Section VI Class C championship game at Highmark Stadium.

Eagles quarterback Brayden Gibbs took the snap and appeared to be stopped for a minimal gain before his teammates pushed the pile for a 17-yard gain.

It was clear this game was going to be different than the teams’ first meeting over a month ago, a 45-0 victory for the Trojans.

Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton’s Thandon Bensink scored on a 2-yard run two plays later and the Eagles never looked back on their way to a dominant 21-0 victory over the Trojans at the home of the Buffalo Bills.

“It all starts with the point of attack. The line does not get nearly enough credit when teams are successful. When you win a game like this, it generally comes down to who wins at the line of scrimmage,” Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton head coach Ty Harper said. ” … Tonight, we took it upon ourselves. We wanted to come out and play physical football.”

“I got hit and stayed up, then I felt everybody come behind me and start pushing me,” Gibbs said. “I knew our line came to play today.”

The program’s third sectional crown — Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake won back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015 — sends the Eagles into next Saturday’s noon Far West Regional at All-High Stadium.

“We just wanted it,” Gibbs said. “(Week 5) was our senior homecoming game and getting embarrassed like that was huge motivation coming into a game like today.”

The 17-yard pile push was just part of Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton dominance Thursday.

The Eagles held the potent Southwestern/Frewsburg offense to just 18 yards rushing on 19 carries and 69 total yards of offense.

“Offensive and defensive lines dominated. Defense did an outstanding job of playing assignment football and playmakers made plays,” Harper said. “It’s all kids. When you win games like this, it’s all kids.”

The Trojans were 0 of 10 on third downs and 0 of 2 on fourth down, in addition to throwing a pair of interceptions.

“At the end of the day, it’s football,” Southwestern/Frewsburg head coach Jake Burkholder said. “We had to come out and play our best game. Unfortunately we didn’t do that tonight.”

Without senior Bradyn Fuller in the backfield, George Marshall led Southwestern/Frewsburg with 11 yards on six carries while quarterback Trent Lewis added just 10 yards on 11 carries.

“We just had to fix some things up front. Trent’s a heck of an athlete. We want to get the ball in his hands and let him make plays,” Burkholder added. “We just had to execute a little bit better here today, especially in the first half.”

Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton, on the other hand, rushed for 181 yards on 41 carries, led by Bensink’s 87 yards on 18 carries and Tristen Gibbs’ 62 yards on eight carries.

“I can’t say enough about every single guy who ran the ball tonight and the offensive line,” Harper said. “I think it shows the heart of our team and the resolve of our kids. … I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a team so dramatically flip the script in a playoff game.”

Brayden Gibbs completed 12 of 20 passes for 147 yards. Devin Hewes caught six passes for 59 yards and Asher Olson caught four passes for 43 yards.

Southwestern/Frewsburg had a chance to tie the game before halftime after Lewis returned a punt 51 yards to the Eagles’ 16-yard line, but three plays later – after a bad snap on second down led to an 11-yard loss – Lewis was sacked to end the first half.

“Going into halftime tied or up one is huge,” Burkholder said. ” … That’s the longest we’ve trailed all year. Points before half there would’ve been huge.”

On Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton’s second drive of the third quarter, Tristen Gibbs capped a seven-play, 83-yard drive with a 14-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0 after Brayden Gibbs completed a 2-point conversion pass to Olson.

Then, on their next drive, the Eagles put the game away on Clay Smith’s 5-yard touchdown run with 2:41 left in the third quarter.

“The defense just stood on its head all day. The kids played with their tails on fire all night,” Harper said. ” … It looked like we might stall out, but our playmakers just made plays. … We were running the ball.”

Now winners of six straight, Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton will look to continue its season next weekend in a state quarterfinal matchup against either Alexander/Pembroke or Letchworth/Warsaw/Perry.

“It was an expectation to get here and win. They are a great program … but after Week 5 I felt like everybody thought of us as that team that lost 45-0 on homecoming,” Brayden Gibbs said. “Coming out here and proving to everyone that we actually can do this is huge.”

NOTES: Newfane won the Class D title game on Mac Capen’s 5-yard touchdown run with 51 seconds remaining. The Panthers, who won their first sectional championship, will play the winner of Section V’s final between Batavia-Notre Dame/Byron-Bergen and Avon at 5 p.m. next Friday at All-High Stadium.
