Red Dragons Claim Class D Boys, Girls Titles; Several Individuals Going To States

ELMA — Southwestern’s Emma Lewis and Maple Grove’s Ethan Verbosky won Section VI cross country championships, while Maple Grove’s boys and girls, Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s girls and Silver Creek/Dunkirk/Forestville’s girls took home team titles Friday at Elma Meadows Golf Course.

Lewis paced the field in Class C, finishing a minute ahead of Newfane’s Eden Hillman with a time of 18:54.01 to 19:58.03.

Verbosky (16:39.60) led the Maple Grove boys to the Class D championship as he edged out West Valley’s Noah Klahn (16:43.23). Verbosky, Ty Kraft (17:19.99), Jacob Lewis (17:27.34), Owen Erlandson (18:00.59), Jack Sherry (18:18.10) led the Red Dragons to a low team score of 28.

Clymer/Sherman/Panama eighth-grader Christopher Phelps (17:29.34) placed seventh overall in Class D and earned a spot in the state meet.

Olivia Harmony (21:06.61) of West Valley took the top spot in the Class D girls race, but third- and fourth-place finishes by Lily Elliss (21:37.94) and Evalyn Fessel (21:47.30) of Maple Grove earned the Red Dragons the team title over Frewsburg 26-36. Maple Grove also had top 10 finishes from Mae Benedetto (22:13.35), Lily Bohall (23:02.74) and Laine Pillittieri (23:06.36).

Frewsburg is sending three girls to states including second-place finisher Jadyn Trocki (21:34.15), sixth-place Raegan Cheney (22:02.75) and seventh-place Grace Gilevski (22:11.50).

While Emma Lewis soared past the competition in Class C2, three top 10 finishes from Savannah Whitney (20:33.70), Riley Johnson (21:08.28) and Grace Cooke (21:23.96) earned the Wolfpack the team title with a score of 55 to Southwestern’s 65.

Fredonia/Westfield finished third as a team in Class C1 at 65, while East Aurora won the team title with 29 points.

The Blue Devils are the only team going to states, but individually they will be joined by Lewis, Whitney and Isabella Czekanski of Fredonia/Westfield after she placed seventh overall with a time of 20:47.87.

Leah Mays (20:22.14) finished first in Class B2, while teammate Hanan Mohamad Narvaez (20:53.11) was right behind her to help the Black Knights nab the team title. The duo also earned a spot at states with fifth- and sixth-place finishes overall.

“Having both Leah and Hanan race together throughout the season really built up some great motivation,” head coach Amy Seiders said. “They loved running against each other but also for each other and to get them both to states, together as teammates, is truly rewarding.”

Helping earn the team title in the top five for Silver Creek/Dunkirk/Forestville were Emma Golembieski (21:17.47), Leona Crane (22:17.03) and Aubrey Waite (24:13.52).

“Qualifying for states this year was a huge motivator for our senior (Hanan) this whole season, ” head coach Adam Woelfle said. “Last year she earned a spot kind of as an alternate who was called up. This year, she would not leave it to chance and ran a great race. She earned every part of this accomplishment.”

The Jamestown boys just missed out on a sectional title in Class A, falling behind West Seneca’s 48 with 66 points.

The Red & Green were led by Wyatt Olmstead (16:48.41) and Finn Caswell (17:06.34), who both earned trips to states after placing fourth and seventh. The Jamestown score was rounded out by Thomas Kathman (17:13.78), Caleb Johnson (18:06.01) and Hudson Himes (18:30.02).

“The team has been locked into this goal since last year,” Jamestown head coach Steve Sipior said. “The guys attended optional team practices all summer with the belief that they have what it takes to be Section VI champions. They trusted their training, and they ran out of their minds today, but they fell just short of their goal. They have made Jamestown proud.”

The Jamestown girls did not fare as well in seventh place, while Frontier took the team title. London Hamilton (20:36.40) took 11th for the Red & Green, while Julia Stormont (22:04.91) was 24th.

The Southwestern boys took second in Class C2, while Fredonia/Westfield finished third in C1 and East Aurora won the overall championship and trip to states.

Pietro Cabitza paced the Hillbillies with a time of 17:19.57 and earned the final spot at the state championships in Class C. Cabitza was the only top 10 finisher in C1 not from East Aurora or Alden, but Jimmy Fagan (17:55.02), Trenton Krenzer (18:19.48), Solomon McKnatt (18:25.93) and Nathan Keefe (18:42.32) rounded out the team scoring in the top 20.

The Trojans were led by Jan Steinmann (19:02.83) in eighth of the C2 race, but Salamanca’s Aiden George (18:59.77) was the top local finisher in seventh and Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Anson Miller (19:03.73) placed ninth. The Trojans rounded out their team scores with finishes from Ethan Lohnes (19:14.82), Kaleb James (19:19.75), Gus Brown (19:26.64) and Kellan Brown (19:31.41).

Other local team results included Frewsburg girls runnerup in Class D at 36, Franklinville/Ellicottville 88, Gowanda 91, Cattaraugus-Little Valley 124 and Brocton 173.

Behind the Maple Grove boys in D were Barker 57, Clymer/Sherman/Panama 58, Franklinville/Ellicottville 94, Gowanda 138, Middle Early College 201, Wilson 202 and Brocton 219.

Class C2 girls were paced by the Wolfpack’s 55, followed by Southwestern 65, Eden 65 and Falconer/Cassadaga Valley took last at 188.
