BATAVIA — The Jamestown Community College swimming and diving teams flexed their skills in their Western New York Athletic Conference season opener.

JCC’s defending national champion women’s team scored 127.5 points to top Genesee CC’s 42 and Erie CC’s 5.5. For the men, it was Jamestown 106, Genesee 47 and Erie 44.

Looking deeper at the ladies’ dominance, in the 1,000-yard freestyle, Addison Lawson beat teammates Cassie Lyon and Sophia Gervasio, who took second and third, respectively.

The trio also swept the podium in the 500-yard freestyle, with Lyon winning and Lawson taking second and Gervasio third.

Sophomore Desiree Putt continued the winning ways for the Jayhawks, beating teammates Emily Swan and Willow Chase in the 200-yard freestyle.

Putt also led three Jayhawks at the front of the 100-yard individual medley. She beat Violet Spiegel and Swan, who earned second and third.

Roxanne Lothian had an impressive showing in her WNYAC debut for the Jayhawks. The freshman won the 200-yard individual medley, edged Putt in the 50-yard backstroke and took second in the 50-yard butterfly.

Jamestown also went one and two in the 50-yard breaststroke. Spiegel took the top spot, and Katrina Degroff touched in second, less than a second behind her classmate.

Finishing up the fantastic showing for the ladies was the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Lyon, Lawson, Gervasio and Chase, coming in at under two minutes.

Flipping to the men, defending national Swimmer of the Year Zach Johnson continues to shine. The South African brought home a win in the 200-yard individual medley by over 14 seconds. Johnson beat teammate Cameron Milewski in the 100-yard freestyle, with Diego Villarroel taking fourth. The sophomore made it three-for-three in individual swims by claiming the 50-yard breaststroke by .08 seconds.

It was also a solid showing at the front of the line for Daniel Peterson. The freshman won the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard individual medley. The Jamestown native also took second in the 50-yard butterfly, where Samuel Hersom grabbed fourth.

Milewski grabbed a pair of wins for the Jayhawks. The sophomore outtouched the competition by .07 seconds to win the 50-yard freestyle. He then jumped into the diving well, where he won with a score of 240.52.

JCC captured second and third in both the 50-yard backstroke and 500-yard freestyle. In the backstroke, it was Christian Merrill in second and Tayanda Sebalo getting third, while Hersom and Noah Miles finished second and third in the free.

“It was a great first meet, with both women’s and men’s teams really performing at a high level,” said head coach Todd Conklin. “It’s nice to get a lot more qualifying times for the national championships so early this season. Both teams should continue to have high hopes for a successful season as we progress through the first half of them,” added Conklin.

The JCC swimmers and divers are back in the water on Wednesday when they host their WNYAC meet at 5 p.m.
