Westfield No. 1 In Class D Volleyball

Southwestern/Frewsburg Is Top Local Football Team; Randolph Girls, Maple Grove Boys In Soccer

The Westfield volleyball team has just dropped three sets this season and is the final undefeated squad in Section VI’s Class D.

In the second weekly ranking released Tuesday by the New York State Sportswriters Association, the Wolverines have soared from unranked into the top spot in the state.

Westfield has been dominant in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 3 action, just dropping three sets and even adding a big five-set victory over Brocton on Tuesday.

Ellicottville moved down one spot from two weeks ago, losing sweeps to Gowanda and Allegany-Limestone in Division 2 play.

Maple Grove (9-3, 3-2 CCAA D3) and Brocton (6-2, 2-2 CCAA D3) remain in the top 10 of Class D at Nos. 8 and 9, respectively.

The Portville (10-0, 8-0 CCAA D1) powerhouse still remains in the top spot of Class C, while Chautauqua Lake (8-1) and Falconer (9-2, 6-1 CCAA D1) have not budged from No. 3 and 4, respectively, in these past two weeks. Eden (8-1, 5-0 ECIC D5) has moved into the No. 8 spot and Gowanda (8-1, 7-0 CCAA D2) is among the honorable mentions.

Royalton-Hartland (9-0, 6-0 N-O) is the only Section VI team ranked in Class B at No. 8, while Section III’s Marcellus is No. 1.

In Class A, Section VI is represented by Williamsville South (8-1, 6-0 ECIC D1) at No. 3 and Hamburg (6-3, 4-0 ECIC D2) at No. 10, while Section V’s Pittsford Sutherland takes the top spot.

In Class AA, Orchard Park (7-0, 4-0 ECIC D1) sits at No. 2 and Williamsville North (6-1, 3-1 ECIC D1) is No. 8 as Section V’s Webster Schroeder sits at the top.

Lancaster (7-2, 3-1 ECIC D1) is the No. 2 team in Class AAA, sitting just behind Section II’s Shenendehowa.

FOOTBALL

There are three remaining undefeated teams in Section VI’s Class C South and those squads have remained in the same spots of the state rankings. Southwestern/Frewsburg (4-0, 3-0) cracks the top 10 at No. 6, while Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton (4-0, 3-0) is just on the outside ahead of their big matchup this Friday. Salamanca (4-0, 3-0) is ranked three spots behind the Eagles at No. 14 and will travel to Portville this week.

Clymer/Sherman/Panama (2-2) sits on the outside as an honorable mention and will eye another win traveling to Fredonia on Friday.

The top Class C team in the state is Section IV’s Chenango Forks (4-0).

A loss in Class D dropped Randolph (3-1) out of the rankings and into the honorable mentions with Franklinville/Ellicottville (2-2) and Gowanda/Pine Valley (3-1).

Undefeated squads Newfane (4-0) and Wilson (4-0) cracked the top 10 at Nos. 4 and 10, respectively, while Section IV’s Tioga (3-1) is No. 1.

Jamestown (2-2) fell back into honorable mention of Class AA after suffering a 30-19 loss to fellow honorable mention Orchard Park (2-2) this past weekend and hosts No. 21 Bennett (3-1) on Friday night with hopes to get back in. Lancaster (3-1) sits at No. 30, Niagara Falls (3-1) is an honorable mention and Iona Prep (4-0) is the top ranked team out of the Catholic High Schools.

Class A is led by Section VIII’s Garden City (3-0), while Section VI places Health Sciences (4-0) at No. 7, McKinley (4-0) at No. 21 and West Seneca West (4-0) at No. 23. The local honorable mentions are Clarence (3-1), North Tonawanda (3-1) and Williamsville East (3-1).

Section IX’s Port Jervis (4-0) is the top team in Class B, while Section VI is represented by West Seneca East (4-0) at No. 12, Williamsville South (3-1) at No. 14 and Iroquois (3-1) at No. 25. Honorable mentions are Depew (3-1) and Lackawanna (2-2).

GIRLS SOCCER

The Southwestern (7-5-0, 6-3-0 CCAA D1) girls soccer team has been dealt some close losses in the competitive Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 and with that has fallen eight spots in the Class B rankings to No. 20.

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove (6-4-0, 6-2-0 CCAA D1) has also felt the effects of a difficult division with losses to drop out of the rankings, not counting dropping a close contest to Allegany-Limestone (5-6-2, 5-2-2 CCAA D1) on Wednesday.

Alden (8-2-1, 6-0-1 ECIC D4) is the lone Section VI squad to join the Trojans in the rankings at 23, while local private school St. Mary’s of Lancaster (12-0-1) is the best team in the state.

Frewsburg has continued winning in Class C, holding pace with the rest of the top 10 as the No. 7 team in the state.

Randolph (10-1-0, 7-0-0 CCAA D2) moved up a spot to No. 19, while Wilson (9-1-0, 7-0-0 N-O) came in for a tie at No. 20 and Section II’s Stillwater (9-1-0) is the top team.

Frontier (10-1-0, 6-1-0 ECIC D1) is the highest-ranked Section VI team in Class AA at No. 4, while Clarence (8-1-1, 5-1-1 ECIC D1) is No. 9 and Lockport (10-2-0, 6-1-0 N-F) is No. 23. Section I’s Albertus Magnus is the state’s top team, sporting a perfect record at 8-0-0.

Class A is topped by Section V’s Aquinas (8-0-0), while Section VI has Starpoint (11-0-0, 7-0-0 ECIC D2) at No. 11, Iroquois (10-2-0, 7-0-0 ECIC D3) at No. 14 and Lewiston-Porter (8-3-1, 6-1-0 N-F) at No. 25.

Lancaster (5-4-0, 4-3-0 ECIC D1) represents Section VI in Class AAA at No. 25, while Section II’s Northport leads the pack.

C.G. Finney (8-0-0) of Section V is the top Class D team.

BOYS SOCCER

Maple Grove (5-4-0, 1-3-0 CCAA DIII) is the only Section VI team in Class D and also the only local team in the rankings, tied with Section II’s Fort Ann at No. 15.

The top team in Class D is a potential Far West Regional opponent of the Red Dragons, Section V’s Fillmore (9-0-0).

The Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association’s only other representative in the rankings are reigning Class C state semifinalist Allegany-Limestone (8-1-0, 5-0-0 CCAA DI) which is No. 11 in the rankings. However, Section VI’s Wilson (11-0-0, 6-0-0 N-O) is undefeated and at No. 2, just behind Section V’s Naples (9-0-0).

The top team in Class B also comes from Section VI as undefeated Lafayette (8-1-1, 8-0-0 Buffalo I) is No. 1 and Medina (8-1-0, 5-1-0 N-O) comes in at No. 17.

East Aurora (9-1-0, 6-0-0 ECIC 2R) comes in at No. 3 in Class A, while undefeated Lewiston-Porter (10-0-0, 8-0-0 NFL F) is No. 14 and Section V’s Pittsford Mendon (10-0-0) is No. 1.

A pair of Section VI teams cracked the top 10 of Class AA with Clarence (10-1-0, 8-1-0 ECIC 1R) at No. 6 and Williamsville East (10-0-0, 6-0-0 ECIC 1B) at No. 8 and Section XI’s undefeated Northport (9-0-0) came in at No. 1.

Lancaster (7-4-0, 6-2-0 ECIC 1R) is the lone Section VI team in Class AAA at No. 16, while Section V’s Fairport (9-0-0) is at the top with another perfect record.
