WEST ELLICOTT — Southwestern/Frewsburg has been near the top of the New York State Sportswriters Association Class C football rankings all season.

They affirmed Thursday night why.

Senior quarterback Trent Lewis ran for two touchdowns and passed for another; senior running back Bradyn Fuller rushed for 131 yards and scored a pair of TDs; and the Trojans’ defense did the rest to highlight their 48-7 victory over Class C North No. 4 Medina in a Section VI Class C quarterfinal.

The win advances Southwestern/Frewsburg (9-0), the top seed from Class C South, into the semifinals a week from today when it hosts Class C North second seed Eden/North Collins. The Raiders advanced by virtue of their 43-28 win last night over Portville/Cuba-Rushford/Bolivar-Richburg, the No. 3 seed from Class C South. With a berth in the championship game on the line, the Southwestern/Frewsburg vs. Eden/North Collins matchup should be an entertaining one.

“We’ve got to be ready to cover the pass,” Trojans head coach Jake Burkholder said. “(The Raiders) throw the ball all over the yard. We’ve just got to be ready to go across the board.”

The Trojans appeared to be up to the task last night, scoring touchdowns on all six of their offensive possessions, providing their followers with plenty to be happy about at a rainy Fran Sirianni Athletic Complex.

In the first quarter, Lewis found the end zone on runs of 50 and 16 yards and then connected with senior Roger Markham on a 41-yard touchdown pass. By halftime, Southwestern/Frewsburg led 27-7, courtesy of Fuller’s 5-yard second-quarter TD run, and then it pushed the margin to 34-7 after three periods, thanks to Fuller’s 46-yard scoring scamper. In the final period, senior George Marshall found the end zone on a 1-yard plunge and junior Miles Torres made a nice run from 33 yards out to complete the scoring with just over a minute remaining.

The lone bright spot for the Mustangs (6-3) came on their very first offensive play from scrimmage when junior quarterback Preston Woodworth connected with senior Kolton Fletcher on a 61-yard touchdown pass. When junior Davi Mucoucah booted the extra point kick, Medina led 7-0 just nine seconds into the first quarter.

“Not a great first play,” Burkholder said, “but outside of that, things went well.”

In fact, Southwestern/Frewsburg’s defense — led by a defensive line combination of Jason Edwards, Branden Francis, Leo Kavic, Tyler McIntyre and Calvin Salisbury — forced a couple turnovers, pressured Woodworth from start to finish and has now yielded a touchdown or less in eight of its nine games.

In fairness, the Mustangs were without leading rusher Christian Moss (1,138 yards, 16 touchdowns), who was ineligible to play after being flagged for a pair of unsportsmanlike penalties last week; and several other players because of injuries.

The Trojans were also nicked up as junior Zach Markham was out with a sprained ankle and Lewis was recovering from strep throat, but it didn’t stop them from turning in yet another stellar performance.

NOTES: Fuller needed just 12 carries to amass 131 yards on the ground and his two touchdowns; Lewis ran for 97 yards on nine carries and two TDs, and completed 5 of 6 passes for 119 yards and the scoring strike to Roger Markham; and the defense took care of the rest. …

Marshall and Miles Torres both intercepted a pass … Senior Brayden Potter collected five tackles; and Marshall and junior Aiden Cusimano had three stops apiece. … Senior Oscar Harris connected on four successful point-after tries. … Lewis added a 2-point conversion run.
