RANDOLPH — The Randolph Cardinals are built for the future.
They’re pretty good right now, too.
Senior Gianna Bowles opened the scoring with her program-record 88th career goal before underclassmen Ava Sears and Serena Smith added goals of their own as the third-seeded Cardinals beat No. 6 Holland 4-0 in a Section VI Class C quarterfinal Saturday afternoon at Raymond Van Wie Stadium.
“We played them earlier … and we went to overtime the first game of the season, but we’ve grown a lot since then,” Randolph head coach Alexa Troutman said. “I’m really proud of how the girls played today.”
Next up for Randolph is a Wednesday semifinal date with No. 2 Frewsburg at the Frewsburg Sports Complex behind Robert H. Jackson Elementary School. The Bears, who have won the past six Section VI championships, beat the Cardinals 2-0 in last year’s sectional final.

“We are excited for whatever matchup we have in the semifinals next week,” Troutman said before knowing the result of the other quarterfinal.
Bowles, one of just three seniors on this year’s team, got Randolph on the board in the fifth minute Saturday. After taking a pass from junior Ella Monroe, Bowles’ left-footed shot scored into the far side of the Holland goal for her school-record 37th goal of the season.
“We look to her a lot for scoring and for facilitating any shots on goal,” Troutman said of Bowles. “She’s going to work hard for her goals and the team is going to work hard to get her one too.”
The Cardinals made it 2-0 in the 21st minute. Smith, an eighth-grader, saw her first shot stopped by the Lady Dutchmen keeper, but Smith stayed with the rebound and sent it home off her upper body for her 10th goal of the season.
Holland’s best opportunity of the first half came in the 24th minute when leading-scorer Autumn Ruminski’s header off a corner kick went high over the Cardinals goal. The Lady Dutchmen then had back-to-back corner kicks in the 50th and 51st minutes, but came away empty.

High-quality opportunities were few and far between for Holland, thanks in large part to the defensive play of Randolph junior Grace Arnold-Hill, and sophomores Kyler Patterson, Jade Miller and Hannah Hill.
“The goal of this game was smart and disciplined defending,” Troutman said of the defensive play in front of sophomore keeper Harper Russell, who was credited with six saves. “Kyler is so dependable back there. All four of the girls we have back there we rely on and trust.”
The Cardinals put the game away with a pair of late goals.
First, Holland’s keeper made a late read on a loose ball at the top of the 18-yard box and Sears, a freshman, was able to get to it first before scoring her ninth goal of the season into an empty net. Then, Smith took a long pass from Hill and scored her 11th goal of the season to the far post.
“They bring the energy up front. They have the mentality to go to goal and to score,” Troutman said of Smith and Sears. “We love the young energy that they bring to the team.”

Now Randolph will look to secure a spot in the sectional final for a second straight year when they take on the Bears on Wednesday. Frewsburg has outscored opponents 62-10 this season, but only beat the Wolverines 2-1 on Saturday.
“We’re really excited,” said Troutman, a 2009 Frewsburg graduate. “We are excited with how we are playing right now.”
